    WilyB's 93 GT rebuild

    Good day y'all!

If it's all the same to you, I'm going to post some pics and info on this new thread as I begin the rebuild of this Canuck 93 Protege GT. I just bought it for $950 in July It's actually in pretty good shape, since it has been rustproofed 5 times since 2001. They didn't manage to protect all of the car, but where Pro's are notorious for rusting, the car is in good shape. Since there were only 500 oif these made, I figured it was worth saving... This is my 3rd Protege... I had a 91 Dx (R.I.P.) and currently own a 94 LX SOHC. That will be my winter beater while I upgrade the GT.

If anybody has any advice to pass along by all means feel free to do so...

Moderator, if you want to move me then do so, however I figured this was the best place for it.

    93 GT rebuild

OK first things first, gut out the interior, look for rust and corrosion and remove.
I figured I would start from the inside out and as I go along whatever I find I can deal with. Not much to my surprise I discovered rust on the floor at the rocker panels both sides, under the pedals, at the trunk/gas cap lever, seat belt brackets and attachment plates, rear shock towers. Passenger side looked ok, driver's side (salt side) was in worse shape.

The undercarriage is not too bad... the car was undercoated 6 times, last time in 2006. I now realize that even when you undercoat a vehicle, they don't always get in all the spots. for example, the car had a fuel smell. I dropped the gas tank found the leak... gas tank needs replacement...But, the filler neck and evap lines were all corroded! shot! $177 at Mazda... where will you find one of those in good shape.

So, in my quest to remove rust, I discovered a few things. I plan on sanblasting part of the interior and wherever I find rust or corrosion on the exterior. There isn't much rust, but the rear shock towers will need to be blasted once I remove the rusty old struts in it now.pics are above...take a look at the rear window near the struts... that's cancer spreading....

Oh but did I find some good ****.... Check it out.... attached are pics of the trunk and gas cap latch before I dunked it into this product called evapo rust and then after emptying the container, putting new stuff in and re dipping it....I was amazed as to how well this stuff worked:

Is this the bomb or what...there are also other products that I want to try... chemically speaking, Phosphoric acid is supposed to eat away rust, however I still need to verify how it affects metals and paints. there is rust converter also; a chemical that is painted or sprayed onto rust( iron oxide) and transforms it into iron tannate... a rock hard surface that is grind able and paint able. one supplier guarantees it won't rust for 5 years! I'll try that next...
mechanically, a 1/4" die grinder that turns at 25,000 rpm with a small wire brush (safety glasses for sure) attached to an air compressor will take care of a lot as well... If you break through the metal as you will see will happen when I get at the floorboard under my pedals (above) a bondo type product named metalox will cover the holes easily. the stuff hardens like steel and can be grinded primed and painted....
