It is completely safe on plastic, the silkscreening is still on the levers, and yes Canadian tire in Canada and true value in US. approx 10$ canuck for a 1liter bottle...

Hey Thanks for the G2 progt91... I'll check that out...BTW a friend here is parting out a 91 GT and is now parting out an SOHC as well.... blew the tranny on it last week... I just found my gas tank, exhaust system, door locks (if you look up, the car was broken into a couple of times and they used a screwdriver on the locks)

I found an interesting article on rust removal explaining phosphoric acid's uses and other methods. I sent a question to the author regarding who it affected paints. I'll post the response when I get it..

Yo Crep, he talks about the electrolytic rust removal method as well

Tell me what you think... if you look above you will see my passenger door with a big hole next to the lock.

I'm debating on how to fix it. I have a new lock and a door. I can either just cut out ( around) the lock hole from the good door and do same with my current door, then epoxy the replacement hole onto my door, a bit of grinding, bondo, prep then paint.
Or I could replace the entire door. That means a whole bunch of parts replacement, sanding painting etc., not to mention that my current door is actually in better shape.
I can't just bondo or fiberglass around the hole because the lock clip then would not fit around the lock barrel and hug properly against the interior wall of the door.

Phosphoric Acid has a unique property of dissolving iron oxide (rust) quickly while etching iron very slowly. This means that you can leave metal in Phosphoric Acid for much longer than necessary with very little damage. The acid will attack bare metal slowly and will start the process of hydrogen embrittlement, so use the minimum etch time that removes all rust.

Another unique advantage of Phosphoric Acid is that it leaves a fine coating of iron phosphate behind. Iron phosphate prevents rust. However, the iron phosphate coating is not very thick and not durable. Some additional protection is still required.

Phosphoric Acid etch will leave a hard, bright metal finish. This is because it will etch the surface slightly, exposing new, bare metal. Often this is desirable. It leaves an attractive surface and a surface ready to paint...

i was just reading through and that rust looks harsh, theres another thing that works well on rust, named ospho, paint it on, leave for 24 hrs, dust off whats left, turns the rust black (think it does the same iron tannate thing lol)

I don't know how bad the Mazda ones get, but of the 14 or so Escorts we have (between my boss and I), a majority of them have surface rust on the filler pipes and a few are rusted through, even on cars that are otherwise solid in that area.
