    Replacing 4th and 5th gear without dropping the tranny?

    I was wondering if the tranny needs to be dropped to replace 4th gear on a G series tranny, or if it can be swapped without dropping it?

    I read an article where you can easily swap the 5th gear without dropping the tranny, but what about the 4th gear?

    Sorry I am not much of a tranny guy...lol

    Thanks

    You have to take the tranny apart to 4th gear. 5th and reverse are under the small cover on the driver's side, and you don't have to drop it to get to those.

      I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

        why does 4th need changing? broken gear, different ratio, or just maybe the synchros going bad?

          You also need a gear puller to get the 4th gear and bearings off...unlike 5th. Can be quite a pain in the rear to do without damaging anything.

            a press works much better than a gear puller.... but yeah as rob said you have to press the bearings off of the ends of the shafts (plan on getting new ones) and then press the gears off. then you need to press the new ones on.

              Different gear ratio...still a little bit too low for my liking...I am not going to sweat it though.

              I just looked at my tire size, and they are 185/65 14 a curse for most, but that should help me meet my efficiency goals.

                  Can you run 13" wheels on your DX? I've got them on my BP'd 323, with 155/80-13's. I'm only getting 32-33mpg, but that's at 75-85mph, with the windows down, and for some silly reason, I find it very hard to take of slowly and gently all the time...

                    Gently =! slowly

                    At highway speed, I have just my big toe resting on the pedal to maintain 60mph.

                    Even then, I still start pulling up to 70+...
