    GI: manual transmission rebuilding

now that i finally have a press and all the other tools needed... i'm considering offering g-series rebuilding services.

what would you guys (honestly) be willing to spend for a "basic" rebuild?

    this would include:
    • all new bearings
    • all new synchros
    • all new seals
    • all clearances properly checked/set

    (vote in the poll)

for additional fees i could also:
    • install a lsd
    • swap out gears for different ratios (new or used)
    • replace damaged or worn shift forks/gates/etc

i wouldnt really be able to offer a warranty as i am not a business... but considering that a rebuilt transmission runs ~$1200 (plus core), i'm sure i could save you guys some money.

i don't have enough space or money to keep an inventory of rebuilt trannies, so this would be done case by case (one person at a time). you'd probably have to either send me a spare to rebuild, or for a little extra i could source one at a local junkyard.

i'd either do this 50%/50%, or payment in full right away... however you'd prefer. turnaround time would be a couple weeks, another reason why it would need to be a spare tranny. i'm doing this in my spare time

    lemme know if you're interested...

I'd be willing to pay up to 400 on a rebuilt transmission + core. This is assuming that parts are including in that price
I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

well... grinding the speedo gear down to fit can make it weak/failure prone (sarge's broke) so i'd prefer not to do that. if you really want to go that route you'll have to grind down the speedo gear yourself, so if it breaks i dont have to feel bad lol. in that case, no extra charge for the install... i can show you the cheapest place to order the speedo gear from.

to do it the "right way" i'd have to get a quote from my machine shop to have the diff machined down to properly fit the speedo gear. your price would be the cost of that machine work plus cost of a new speedo gear.

a quaife, kaaz, or mfactory diff would be more, as i would need to drill out all the rivets and fit the stock ring gear to the new diff.

                    a .717 swap?

i would have to see how much the parts are vs. cost/time getting them at a junkyard.

Yea ill get the 626 5th swap too and send that with the lsd. Do you have any idea on how much it would cost to have the diff machined down to properly fit the speedo gear?

im really looking for a rebuild soon and i dont trust any of the shops by me, i took my g25mr to a trans shop to have them fix a leak and they came back and told me parts where obsolete for that trans, now i think they really didnt want to bother maybe because its a festiva and they didnt want to waste there time. well they did find the leak its the shifter seal and i WAS able to get a new one from a dealership. anyways to stay on topic i think you need to figure price by labor. then prices for parts, can we supply are own parts?

i have no idea i would have to check with my machine shop.

if you send the 5th gears to me i'm not going to charge anything to install... 5th has to come off to take things apart anyway lol.

if you would rather supply all your own parts, we could probably work something out. are there some sort of special parts that you want to use or something?
