ring gear removal
So last Friday I drove up to my old shop and slaped the ring gear on a mill and proceded to remove the rivets. Right out of the gate the first one started spinning. I tried another and with about 0.100 to go it spun! So I popped the end mill out and centerpunched the rivets, put a drill bit in and went at it, the first one spin, so I grab a pair of Vise Grips and held the OD while I drilled thru. This seemed to work the best, compleated the bolt pattern and started knocking out the rivets. This went great with the exception of 3 rivets that did not want to move. I put the gear back on the Mill table and drilled down a bit further, at this point the gear was free from the diff plate but something was holding it up. Lo & behold a sub plate (the other part where the lsd broke) that was screwed to the diff body. I had to pry that loose because it was hung up buy the rivets and the ID of the ring gear. Once the sub plate was off I still had to take a 1/2 inch dowel pin and push the remaining 3 rivets out on an arbor press with a cheater bar. Long Story short it worked. However, it took the better part of 45 mins to get the job done.Ohhhh Yeaaahhhh

Spun bearings in trans case
Sat. morning I drive up to my nephews repair shop to use their degreaser; so I can reassemble my trans in a somewhat clean state. As I am removing the diff races I notice that the shaft races on both sides of the case are also spun, so I pop them out and also remove the output shaft seal (why not). It goes into the cooker with one race firmly in place. This is one of those environmentally safe parts cleaners, about an hour later we go over an check on the progress. The heat of the wash expanded the case enough that the only race that had not spun fell out.
My thoughts on this are that Locktite makes a product specifically for this type application. My Nephew is checking with their trans shop, and should get back to me today. Anyone else have any thoughts on this situation??Ohhhh Yeaaahhhh

it always amazes me how many different products that company has, lol
it looks like the 232 might work well? you wouldnt want something that fits too tight, or you might end up cracking the case trying to remove it later on.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

I did an ask the pro thing we will see what they recommend.
short of :
1. buying another case
2. line boring the seats out and pressing in a sleeve and then re-boring the seats to depth and size.
This is a best case fix.....i hope.
It seems to me this is a case where Geo Tolerances just didn't get it done, or this case should have been scrap! A bearing seat press fit should NEVER spin, if it is machined correctly!Ohhhh Yeaaahhhh

the races arent really press fit, thats the problem... on EVERY one i've opened they have at most been just a little tighter than "push in" fit. it has to have been intentional, as i've opened a LOT of these things.
the loctite is a great idea thoughEscort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

Hmm, I guess I never mentioned it, but I used Loctite 638 'Retaining Compound' on the secondary inner race. My hope was that the bond between the race and case was strong enough to help prevent the 'floor' of the race to collapse like my previous transmission. So, basically instead of the race just being supported by the end, the Loctite should give some support by holding the race by the surrounding wall. Hopefully what I just wrote makes sense, lol.

Reply from Locktite
Actually, for a press fit, you're best off with the low-viscosity products 609 or 603. To make sure you get good coverage, put a bead around the leading edge of both pieces. That way, when you press them together, the retaining compound will scrape across itself.Ohhhh Yeaaahhhh

Yeah, except I wouldn't really call the fit a 'press' fit and more of a 'slip' fit. I mean, you are supposed to be able to lift out the secondary inner race using the plastic funnel piece that's behind it...

A round peg of 1.0000" will not go into a round hole that is also 1.0000"...this would be a press fit. A round peg of 1.0001 would make this an interference fit, and it just gets more complex from there on with material compatibility and so forth.
A round peg of 0.9999 will slip into a hole that is 1.0000" this would be a slip fit. (air in a blind hole makes this a bit more complex)
It seems to me (imho) that a race for a thrust bearing on a gear shaft would want to remain fixed, otherwise why have a bearing at all? Given that the case is aluminum it is all the more perplexing!
I can copy you a 5 page detailed spec. from the machinery's handbook if you wish, like wise with the classification of fits (ISO).
Then again as read else where on this site Mazda's quality of fit & finish...is what it is!Ohhhh Yeaaahhhh
