    Common issues to look into when buying a BHA...

    So I came across an ad on Kijiji for a 97 Protege for sale for $300. In the ad he said that the body is shot but it runs good, and he's selling it for parts. I asked if it could be repaired and he replied most likely. I took a quick look at it today and its an LX "Touring Edition": fully loaded, nice interior, rear spoiler. It has a Z5 and a 5-speed. He didn't have the keys with him today (car is at his work, a local car dealership) but I'm going to arrange to meet him on Saturday to hear it running and take a closer look. The car desperately needs rocker panels, but that's not a big deal. The rear wheel wells also need some love and it could possibly use a new RF fender, but again, that's no big deal.

    I know the Z5 isn't the most powerful engine but at this point I'm just looking for something that's in a bit better shape and more reliable than my 94 DX. I have 2 BPs that I could swap into this car later on down the road once I can get the proper OBD2 harness and sensors.

    So, what else should I be looking for?

    I swung back over there later and took some pictures... it got dark out and its pretty closed in so I couldn't get any really good overall pictures but here we go.







    Now, I managed to get a shot of the underside of the engine that barely shows the oil pan. From my research, the Z5 has a stamped steel oil pan.... this looks like a cast aluminium BP oil pan... score!

      Yeah, LX Touring in Canada came with a BP.

      AND...

        cars in that bad of condition go to the JY around here...

        but hey, if you can fix it, go for it.

          Well, my main concern is if the rust has gotten to the structural parts of the car. The one I'm driving now has some major structural issues that will soon kill the car. This one here.... doesn't look too too bad, as long as the rockers can be fixed, which seems possible at this point. Like I said, I'll have to get a better look.

            look for typical stuff on a car
            well if u think u got the rust under control;

            look for headgasket issues..
            pretty much how it runs.

            my pro has never given me any major issues so it's hard to say what to look for.

              if the rockers are that rotted through then good luck with the fuel , brake lines , any suspension bolt , front crossmember bolts , fuel filler neck , rear strut towers , front strut towers where they meet the frame rail ( inside bottom towards the motor)

              300 is typically the used car lot's base price to sell a car that usually cost them nothing (included in a "lot" from auction or as a trade in ) offer 150 and stick to it if you really want to rebuild the car with massive rust restoration

                The guy that is selling it was driving it up until 3 weeks ago, apparently. He's already patched up the floor, so Idk. I'll be sure to check it out thoroughly and adjust my offer accordingly. I think he's a service tech at the dealership, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he might be able to get it on a lift for me to check it out...
