After cruising through my favorite wrecking yard, I found a 92 miata 1.6 (large nose crank) and they have recently recieved a merc capri xr2 with a complete 1.6 with bouts 117k on it. Not sure as to the mileage on the miata. I understand the work involved and extra parts needed to make the miata engine work, so work aside, which engine would be a better swap for my 88 323 hb se? Opinions wanted. Thanks.

If you're going the forced-induction route, I'd grab everything I could from the Capri XR2. Then I'd have the motor rebuilt with higher compression pistons from the Miata. I haven't heard anything definitive about what year/VIN number that the Capri started using the large-nose crank, so I'd check that out first.
Hell, grab both and sell what you don't need/want.

Both bottom ends are about the same besides the slight difference in compression. The large nose miata engine would be better but will require a fwd head, oil pan and other small stuff. Turbo would be more fun though. Pretty sure that the Capri was a smalll nose crank.
Choice is yours really if u want turbo or not, both swaps will be equaly as hard cause u are either converting rwd to fwd or adding a turbo system to a car that never had one."See that car, in the 80's that car was deadly." Random man to his son while passing the GTX in a parking lot

Easiest is just grab the xr2 drivetrain and suspension it'll bolt right into your 323. Best would be the xr2 stuff with miata short block.12 cbr250r: daily ride

The capri changed over to the large crank mid '90 production IIRC.
