My friend and I have both own a 1988 323 gt. On separate occasions we filled our gas tank at the gas station, only to discover that that the gas is overflowing @ the top of the hanger assembly. When I checked mine i found that the fuel tank lock ring wasn't damage from a visual inspection, but it was still leaking from the top. Could it be that the fuel tank lock ring has become harden and unable to prevent the fuel from leaking at the top?

No, it's because the tank is plastic and the ring is metal. (almost all mazdas and fords that have this setup and are located in wet or snowy climates have this problem.) The ring rusts and partly seperates from the plastic tank, because plastic doesn't rust. That's what causes the leak. You pretty much need a new fuel tank. I haven't found a way to fix it..... this has happened to every escort and protege I have owned. My family has lots of bg's!

All 323 GT's, and GTX's are steel tanks. Your FI sending unit should have a number of screws holding it to the tank. Under the top plate of the sending unit is a rubber gasket that fits between the sending unit and the tank. After many years, they will start to crack and dry out. At this point its best to replace it. I bought a new one at my dealer for like $17. Its not hard to replace either. Hope that helps.Mazda
