1987 group N European rally Car

Its about time I said hello.

My name is Nige and i am from wet and windy Oxford in the UK and i am slowley rebuilding a 1987 323 turbo which I brought from Holland at the end of 2008.

This is the car as we got her, slowly we are finding things out about her, The car started life from new as a Group N rally car back in 1987 over in Holland, As you can see the car was originally black and driven by a Dutch driver Ko Fass

The guy I brought the car from has just managed to track Ko Fass down in Holland so hopefully so more of its history will be found, so far we have found these photos of it and recently found out it raced from Finland and all the way down to Spain also the Scotish, Irish and the Manx.

Sorry its a crappy piece of video clip but this is taken from the 1989 Hunsrück Rallye in Germany and there a short shot of the car at 16 seconds in,

A very short clip of my Mazda 323 turbo 4x4 from the 1989 Hunsruck rally in Germany

So back to now, We went over to Holland on a mad impulse and came back with the Mazzie, at some point in its past, not to sure when at the moment the car was converted over to Group A, sadly the engine and Tran-X box have long gone
but it still has the Group A hubs and 4 pot calipers all round.

Wow, is too cool how you have so much history about the car! So the motor and tranny are no good? What are your plans?

Very nice car. Happy to see the MRTE paint job on it. I'm probably gonna do the same on my rally car.

                Like a mug I did

Well its going to be quite a long trip to get her back to where i want her to be, we are building a new motor for her at the moment, Engine block has been bored out to 1620cc, decked, Carillo rods, JE forged pistons, lightened and balanced knife edge crank, ARP bolts, fully polished and ported gas flowed head, gas flowed and matched inlet manifold, Reground cams, solid lifters, Colmic head gasket. VJ23 turbo charger with forge actuator with tubular stainless steel header manifold and twin tubular down pipe, 460cc injectors running on a fully standalone Omex 600 ecu, I ve managed to get a set of shot peened, tuffriden gears to go in the box which I shall run through a pair of electric pumps and cooler's

                    Thankyou very much

Well I should hopefully get the head back tommorow from the engine shop after having a 8 thou skin so its ready for the Colmetic gasket comming from your part of the world so we can start the rebuild.

Hmmmm, we started thinking a little bit more puff might be needed for the rebuilt engine

This is the standerd set up, cast manifold and a IHI VJ 14 turbo, good for about 220 bhp with all the other bits :D

Thought long and hard about it and seeing the car has changed so much in it life's from when it started it rallying a few more mods wouldn't go a drift

                    So................................................ .....................:ihih:

                    Meet the IHI VJ 23

A friend had this set up built about 18 months and ran it from 14 psi up to 24 psi :yikes:

Might be laggier than you really want on a rallycar though, especially on a 1.6. That manifold should help, some. Do you guys need to run a 34mm restrictor like we do here? Cuz if you do, that turbo will be a waste of time unless you have the cash to go all WRC on the valvetrain. Antilagging a vj23 is sacrilege, cuz it's a rare beast. Better off antilagging some sorta Soobie pullapart instead.

PS 460cc injectors and that turbo at high boost, especially unrestricted boost ain't enough fuel. I'm using 550's on a 1.8 at those boost levels and they're just barely sufficient (dangerous duty cycle, like 93%).

Thanks for the imput Jay, I am not going to start with 24 psi just low boost to start and map her up from there, the injectors I shall run at a higher presure so the should flow a lot higher, if not a friends got a set of Evo ones i can try.

Turbo lags great fun, lots of left foot brakeing, don't worrie i wont be going down the antilag route with the turbo, sounds great but I can't afford a new turbo every few months

Well a little bit farther along with the rebuild today. Got my head finished by my mate the other week and got it back from the engine shop midweek after haveing 8 thou skimmed of it so we can go for the 5 layer Colmetic gasket

                              All the valves in

A nice set of solid lifters,

And a nice set of cams,
