I happened to be in Strauss Auto today, an auto parts chain with stores located in NY, NJ and PA. I noticed that they carried Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30 (also known as German Castrol). This is the real deal, a genuine PAO-based synthetic oil. Don't confuse it with domestic Castrol Syntec which we all know by now is a hydrocracked Group III petroleum based product. The store sells both types and the containers are similar so if you want the true synthetic make sure the container is labeled "European Formula," SAE 0W-30, and that it says "Made in Germany" on the back. The cost was US $6/quart - not bad for a true synthetic. I'm assuming that if my local store in NJ has it for sale it's also available at other Strauss stores.
