    Jeffs MSP GTR Build

    Project GTR.

    As it arrived on day 1...







    ~5 Months Later...













    Planned Go Fast Parts
    Custom intake piping, BB turbo, water to air IC, custom ITB intake manifold, 600+cc fuel injectors, hondata spacer, mkII vvt miata head, custom tubular manifold, Lex's pNp ms unit with stock FWD BP harness. diyautotune vvt controller Custom mounts and crossmember. Stock GTR oil cooler.


    Basically a GTR bottom(strongest BP bottom), mk2 VVT miata head (best flowing BP head) with a strong Toyota transmission. So really it the best of the mazda b series plus everything else I can get my hands on / fabricate.



    So far:

    GTR Motor - $400 (Sold GTR Head + $200 Sold BP26 Cams + $180)

    (so basically I paid $20 for a GTR bottom end )

    VVT Miata Head - $300US

    Escort GT Distributor - 20

    Escort GT Alternator - 20

    Toyota E153 Trans - $250

    Trans adaptor Plate - $230

    Escort GT Harness - 20

    1998 Suzuki GSXR 750cc ITBs with fuel rail, injectors, TPS - $135

    MSD Blaster 2 Ignition - $50

    ARP Head Stud Kit - $115

      This is my new phelonic gasket for the vvt mk2 head. Should keep the manifold nice and cool. Also a pic of how I crushed a runner to almost perfect port size. With a little blending it is quite the impressive transition from round to the port shape.











      Will have pics on BP once its all finished.

        Disty Ignition from Escort GT with MSD Blaster2 coil and NGK wires.





        The MK2 vvt head has a block off plate that must be removed to convert to a distributor setup. Mazda was nice enough to leave the cam drive for the distributor on the exhaust cam even though the MK2 heads, both vvt and non vvt used coil on plug ignition. thanks mazda




        This msd blaster2 coil seems to be the tried and proven solution to firing high boost high rpm mixtures on turbo bps. Its weight is considerable, most who pick it up are quite surprised.

        EMS - Because I am planning on using Lex's PnP MS Unit w/stock harness I need to use the distributor. In the future I may look into coil on plug but for now, if it aint broke dont fix it. Plug and Play is nice.

        Injectors-Still looking for a deal on BIG injectors that fit BP rails

                    This is an interesting build up!

                    I just want t add my opinion about the VVT. I don't think its a good thing with a turbo, cause it's going to change the opening time of the intake valve as the RPM increase. You probably know that valve overlap is not friendly with turbo as it will raise the temp of the exaust gas. The BP is an engine tend to like running high on temp and I can tell, you don't want to add valve overlap in there.

                    Just make sure you got an EGT while tuning, I blown 2 engines learning the bad way...each time I melted a piston.

                      this is from a thread on miata.net about vvt pros/cons/ same car same everything. full advance vs full retard. plenty of high boost vvt bps out there. but egt will be monitored closely. if what you are saying is true then i just dont full retard, but i doubt its any issue. some people run the cam full retarded all the time as they have no vvt controller and are still running strong/

                      id put more money on retarded ignition timing or uneven fuel distribution causing your poor egts than intake cam retarding. ever monitor your knock sensor? using a stock bp fuel rail? at high boost? heck even a slight casting imperfection could cause a hot spot which could blow the motor..

                      either way I have a complete methenol/water injection system that I have been using in my speed for the past 5 years that also helps lower egt, but i still dont think it will be an issue as there are plenty of built rods/pistons 2001+ bps that are running stock vvt operation and they put out more power than i will ever see with gtr rods/pistons.

                        which is full advance and which is full retard? how many degrees advance/retard are we talking here?

                        i need more top end torque, right now my torque curve is shaped exactly like the pink line in that graph.

                              looks like i will be retarding my intake cam significantly this year. :D

                              thanks for the links, awesome!! it appears to slow the climb in torque, which for me would be very helpful. the way the torque comes on hard and fast at ~4k makes the car nigh impossible to drive hard on the street . the sudden jump in torque lights up the tires immediately even in 3rd gear.

                              so if i were you, i'd just lock that sucker at full retard and enjoy :D
