Loving the hard work put into this. Should make for a real sweet hot rod.

      thanks dan

update for you guys. I have been working like crazy so I havent been able to finish much. If you guys think cars are money pits, dont buy a house, especially by yourself. I have been getting my ass kicked. Nothing but bill after bill after bill. I really need to find a hot chick with some money lol

Right now I am lucky if I even get an hour a day to work on the car which sucks considering it takes me 20 mins just to get changed and pull out all my tools.

regardless, the bp drivetrain is in the car. it even fit with the stock escort gt radiator. dont think i can reuse the stock escort fan though. the fuel rail connections also worked fine.

As it turns out it looks like I cannot use ANY of the stock mounts. So complete custom mount job. Also turns out the EGT axles are slightly longer than the 3rd gen axles. Not sure if this is gonna be an issue or not. I was still able to put everything together without it binding so I think I am ok there.

Now I am trying to position the drivetrain as far back and as low as possible to help with the handling of the car. I figured I might as well do this since I am already building all custom mounts and custom crossmember.

The strange thing is I was only able to get 2.7l of transmission fluid into the trans. I had the trans sitting on its side for a week and I could have sworn all fluid was drained, but I am still short .6l and the fluid is right to the top. I figured I didnt angle the drivetrain correctly so I tried angling it forward, backward and keeping it flat (valve cover level).

In any position the fluid level doesnt really change much, maybe I could add another .2 liters if I dramatically tipped it forward.

Wondering what angle you guys think I should mount the engine for best weight distribution / oiling of engine /trans.

I also had to shorten my prized ITB manifold. No matter what I do it hits the connectors for the heater core. Knowing this now the next time I build one it will be slightly angled upwards rather than straight to avoid this issue. In the 3rd gen the heater core connectors come out a bit farther than the 1st gens which is why I am having the issue. Just enough that I had to make changes to my manifold. Sort of a shame as I love the long runner design.

As for the wiring, the entire MSP engine harness got electrical taped like nuts and then put into the area where the rear engine mount would go on a 3rd gen typically. The BP harness is a mess all over the engine bay right now but will get nicely done once I have determined final position of drivetrain.

As for the turbo, I could not find proper crush washers for the life of me until finally I found a multi pack of washers at canadian tire for $3 a pop. I only needed 1 washer from each pack so I ended up buy 6 of them (2 for oil in, 4 for coolant in/out).

With the turbo mounted on the miata manifold it still clears the escort radiator, but I dont think I can make it work with a stock EGT fan as I noted earlier.

The AC system got thoroughly disassembled and removed. The power steering system is gone. I will be switching to the electric power steering system from the mr2 eventually but right now i am just worrying about getting the car started.

The only thing I am "missing" would be a proper rubber hose for the turbo oil drain. I drilled a hole in the pan in the same place as the begi miata kit, and then took the hard saab oil return line (7/8" ID angled steel oil return) cut it in half, put half on the turbo, the other half threaded into the oil pan and JB welded for extra tightness. Now I have a great return angle with good size, just need about 9 inches of so of hose to connect the turbo to the drain.

not sure where i can pick up a reliable drain hose for this. Every hose I find seems to be low temp or not suitable for oil use. Its very frustrating lol Not interested in using AN fittings or fancy SS hose on this setup, just looking for a good quality hose that works. I would just reuse the saab hose, but it is about 7 inches too short.

I also ended up wiring the MSP fuel pump and the MSD ignition coil to manual switches in the interior. That way people who dont know about my setup cannot steal my car so easily as they will have no fuel or spark and will have to tow it away or something if they wanna steal it lol

other than that the project is in good condition. I drilled a huge hole through the firewall and ran the BP harness through as well as some other odds and ends. The wiring is plenty long into the interior which is nice as there is room to work with.

Only thing left to do wiring wise is double check my BP wiring.

If any of you can confirm these wire colors of the BP I would be very appreciative lol

      1. brown wire is "starter key turned on ignition"
      2. Clutch/neutral is 1V on BP harness, (should be brown/yellow on bp harness)
      3. 1c on BP harness is "ignition 2 on"
      4. I have a green/black wire that is cut. I think it goes to either temperature sensor, or o2 sensor, not sure will have to double check my diagram

basically my plan with the wiring is to manually turn on the fuel pump and ignition coil. Then give power to "ignition2" of the BP harness, then give power to the starter to start the engine. I dont think I need to tap into anything else other than the clutch neutral switch.

anyways that is all I can think of to say about the project off the top of my head.

next time I have access to a camera i will try to take some pics.

the gtr motor is doing great and I have started building a "sexy" ITB manifold for it. As I said earlier once the car gets running and tuned on the normal bp I will be swapping in the GTR with more exotic parts like a larger turbo, larger injectors, fancy lines etc. I already picked up all the SS turbo oil drain and feed and an adaptor for the oil feed to the block. Bought all nice blue anodized fittings and the lines are the shiny ss type. they look awsome compared to what i am using on the junk motor.

ok found some pics from last week

here we are with the axles put in, still fandangling room around the engine bay

here is a pic of the first mazdaspeed protege to ever have individual throttle bodies

this pic shows the rad clearance. Ive cleaned it up quite a bit since I took these pics and also cut out the stock rad supports and welded in new ones lower and the proper width for the EGT rad.

          one small note,

if you swap out the EGT trans for a 94-97 1.8L kia sephia trans, then your 3rd gen axles should be drop in and go

ya but i dont have a kia trans so no abs or mazdaspeed axles for me. either way this whole setup wont be here for long so i am not too worried as long as I dont end up with some weird binding issues. The difference is so small and the engine is in a different location so I am hoping the length diff will be a non issue.

can anyone confirm the colors of these wires? I have different sources telling me different things. The harness I have is obd1

              1. brown wire is "starter key turned to crank on ignition column"
              2. Clutch/neutral is 1V on BP harness, (should be brown/yellow on bp harness)
              3. 1c on BP harness is "ignition 2 on". Not sure what color it SHOULD be
              4. I have a green/black wire that is cut. I think it goes to temperature sensor as it seems to be the only connector missing from my bp harness

Those throttle bodies are going to be your main headache. Are they sync'd together yet? If not, you are going to have problems in your tune when you are off boost. So in other words, your street driveability is going to suck! Your A/F ratios will be all over the place too. Personally, a Mustang throttle body and a good sheet metal intake manifold will do it for what ever you throw at it. That's my 2 cents, just want to save you headaches in the future

ya the syncing is gonna be the fun part, but it shouldnt be that hard. a few good gauges and a couple hours and im sure it will run ok. got a few plans for keeping a good vac signal, i think i discussed them in your thread actually lol you started me into this ITB business buddy lol I will make it run good

All I can say is good luck! For vacuum; once you have perfectlly sync your ITBs, you will have vacuum. You are going to do a Hybrid tune right? Meaning tunning via TPS/MAF...

no no only LSD I am buying will be for the E153 toyota trans.

this EGT drivetrain wont be in for long enough to bother with LSD. but that would be a good idea if i stayed with this transmission setup.

yep should be fun. I have done some reading on syncing the ITBs. Got my one way valves and the small plastic vac line to run to the gauges and MS. Should be pretty good for vac signal. For the TPS Lex left me an easy connection to the MS unit. Just looking for a proper TPS plug right now as duct taped wires look ghetto fabulous.

I think with the TPS and MAP it should be ok. Only thing I am worried about is losing a spring for the ITBs over time cause Im sure finding a replacement will be not fun.
