    Power Output Ratings, BJ

The following data is taken from official Mazda Protege brochures in my possession now and available at the time from dealers when that particular car was in production, as well as from various issues of Road & Track and Car and Driver magazines. TheMAN's FAQ also contains engine specifications and can be accessed at:

In addition to the original SAE net BHP and torque figures given, I've included a conversion to SI units and as well added calculated BMEP values in order to enable more meaningful comparisons to be made of the power outputs and efficiencies among the engines listed here. Engines have two BMEP ratings - one at max BHP, one at max torque - the latter always the greater of the two. For more information about BMEP, go to:

All 3rd Gen Protege engines are 4-cylinder inline DOHC with 4-valves per cylinder.

    1999 to 2001, 1.6 L, ZM-DE Engine
    Displacement: 1597 cc
    Bore x Stroke: 78 mm x 83.6 mm
    CR: 9:1
    BHP: 105 @ 5,500 rpm, SAE net (78 kW); BMEP: 155 psi
    Torque: 107 lbs/ft @ 4,000 rpm, SAE net; (145 Nm); BMEP: 166 psi

    1999 to 2000, 1.8 L, FP-DE Engine
    Displacement: 1839 cc
    Bore x Stroke: 83 mm x 85 mm
    CR: 9.1:1
    BHP: 122 @ 6,000 rpm, SAE net (91 kW); BMEP: 144 psi
    Torque: 120 lbs/ft @ 4,000 rpm (163 Nm); BMEP: 161 psi

    2001 to 2003, 2.0 L, FS-DE Engine
    Displacement: 1991 cc
    Bore x Stroke: 83 mm x 92 mm
    CR: 9.1:1
ALL PROTEGES AND PROTEGE 5 EXCEPT 2001 MP3
    BHP: 130 @ 6,000 rpm, SAE net (97 kW); BMEP: 141 psi
    Torque: 135 lbs/ft @ 4,000 rpm (183 Nm); BMEP: 168 psi

    2001 MP3
    BHP: 140 @ 6,000 rpm, SAE net (104 kW); BMEP: 152 psi
    Torque: 142 lbs/ft @ 4,500 rpm (193 Nm); BMEP: 176 psi

For a description of the OEM modifications employed to enhance the power output of the MP3, go to:

    2003 2.0 L, FS-DET Engine, Mazdaspeed Protege Turbo
    Displacement: 1991 cc
    Bore x Stroke: 83 mm x 92 mm
    CR: 9.1:1
    BHP: 170 @ 6,000 rpm, SAE net (127 kW); BMEP: 185 psi
    Torque: 160 lbs/ft @ 3,500 rpm (217 Nm); BMEP: 199 psi

Strikingly obvious is the substantial increase in both power output and BMEP in the turbo engine compared with the normally aspirated models. Also of note is the fact that the 1.6 L engine has a higher BMEP at max HP than both the 1.8 L and 2.0 L engines (including the MP3). Possibly because the 1.6 L engine reaches its power peak 500 rpm below that of the two larger engines? Interestingly, the 1.6 L engine's BMEP at max torque is higher than that of the 1.8 L engine and just slightly below that of the 2.0 L (although substantially below that of the MP3 version). This suggests that the 1.6 L engine is a highly efficient powerplant in comparison with the two larger displacement models.

    Happy Motoring!
