CV joint / half shaft compatability

    Question for this thread:

Are there any half shafts for the driver's side which are compatible with my Protege (97) aside from the 95-98 model years? Some sources suggest that Kia Sephia models 95-97 will work, and, other sources suggest that many of the Escorts and their variants also share the same left drive shaft.

Has anyone actually used one from a Kia/Escort or other body style Protege and had it work fine?

Also, I'm having a tough time at the JY getting the shaft loose from the transmission...any tips on getting that end out? It looks like all the Escorts and Proteges share the same issue of very tight space in there.

    Thanks!

I think I have the half shaft from my 97 laying around.

The Kias will only fit the 95 due the spline count of the G-series found in that year. The Escort one will not work in ANY model of BHA.

Is there a reason why the Escorts won't work? Just curious as two of the sources I was looking at state their replacement left side shafts work in both the Proteges (except the 95 with MT) and all Escorts from 1991-2003 provided the Escort has an AT.

Hub spline do match up but i believe what he is refering too is that the spline inside teh diff will not match. I was just recently researching this since i am pulling alot of parts off my escort and putting them on my pro.

In case you're wondering what I'm referrring to here's a company that makes half shafts which claim that many of the Escorts/MX-3s/Proteges use the same left half shaft:

Download the PDF and look at part number 6259N.

Rockauto has two parts for the left of a 97 Protege: one by Cardone and one by AUP. The Cardone part claims compatibility with just Sephias and Proteges (95-98) but the AUP part claims the same compatibility as the DSS part noted above. Odd. I see them listed on ebay as well.

Based on their information the left shaft I pulled from a 99 Protege with a MT should fit on mine (the spline count on both ends and compressed length is the same as mine). Yet none of the other vendors show that it matches. If I cannot separate my hub from the shaft I'm going to give it a go and see what happens (I matched the shaft from a left shaft from a 96 at the J with AT and bad joints).

I wonder what's up with this?

Try as I may I simply cannot separate the left shaft's input from the hub. Tried a 3 jaw puller just now and the threaded shaft on the puller simply digs into the end of the input shaft on the CV joint. Looks like I'm going to pull the shaft/hub as an assembly after all. Since I'm going to have to drain the transmission I'll have to wait for a warmer day to do this. I'll certainly report back if the DSS PDF is correct or wrong.

Well if that is the case, i say give it a shot if it is a easier approach for you.
