    Valve cover gaskets REQUIRE sealant!

When I bought my car, (SOHC) the valve cover gasket was leaking. I bought a new one at the dealer. I had a Haynes manual then, not a factory one. The new gasket leaked as much or more! I found the factory manual on a torrent site. The diagram said to use "sealant" on the gasket, but it didn't seem to say WHAT sealant! I bought Permatex Ultra Black RTV. It says: "maximum oil resistance, works up to 500 degrees F.". I bought a Fel-Pro gasket. It says on the box not to use any sealant. I applied a thin layer to the side of the gasket that goes toward the valve cover. (don't try to put it on the cover itself, the channel is very narrow) Then I put the gasket into the cover, and put another thin layer on the other side. Now, several weeks later, still no leakage! Use the torque numbers in the manual. They seem really low, but it works. I don't have a inch-pound torque wrench, I divided by 12, and carefully used a beam-type ft.-lb. torque wrench.

I just use gasket maker for the entire valve cover I dont have the factory one because it always leaks.

yep, permatex RTV "rightstuff" is one of the better sealants you can get at the store, seals instantly so you can get back on the road. Valve cover, as well as most gaskets require the aid of RTV. Hell our oil pan gasket is only the ends, and the rest requires two layers of RTV to seal it.

I've even used the rightstuff in replacement of the paper gaskets for the coolant system as well (not specifically the water pump itself) , and I haven't had any issues yet. Saved me about $20-30 in gaskets that way.

yep that's the stuff I used, comes in a 1/2 tube (at least where I've found it) and you can also get the specific caulking "kit" with the tube as well.

Don't forget to recheck the bolts after a few days.

I have always had good luck using Mopars black RTV. I dont know how much it costs because my boss will buy a couple boxes from the local dealer. I have used it on everything ranging from water pump gaskets to differential pumpkin gaskets with no issues.

BFM....what the hell is that as your avatar? LMAO!

ya I've heard that dealership/OEM RTV is pretty decent all around as well. Toyota & Subaru supposed to be the king of them though, and the prices reflect this haha.

Have used it for the water pump without the factory paper gasket, 4 years and not a drop of coolant.

                  Cheers!

Toyota black sealer. Yes. This is the answer to the question.
Funny though, I've never had a valvecover gasket leak.

LOL, I just replaced mine last month. The top of the tranny was a bunch of little standing oil ponds.

usually it's the disti o-ring that's a complete pain on leaking lol, and it's a seal that goes every 5-10k it seems as well...idk wtf is up with that!!
