I would put it down as one of the world's most useless options, plus I doubt the wisdom of getting a 200+ LB option on a car with 150 HP. The effect is noticable, but I would just call it strange. IF the is any perfromance advantage (which I doubt), it is offset by the additional weight. The turning circle is proably tighter, but still seems large (I was driving a Miata before and it has been a long time since I have driven a MX6).

I have had many mx6's, all had 4WS and I used to think they handled pretty good. I now have a non 4WS, and it handles soooooo much better than any of the 4WS ones. The whole 4WS system adds at least 30-40kg to the car too. Waste of weight for an awful troublesome feature. Hence the reason Mazda ditched it in the series 2 of the mx6
