    Filter change on LA4A-EL in 96 626?

I was going to change the fluid and filter on the LA4A-EL auto trans in my 1996 626 when I noticed in the factory service manual that the filter is behind the valve body.

I then turned to the owners manual that had no scheduled maintenance listed for the auto transmissions.

    My questions:

How often is a trans filter change necessary?

How difficult is it to get to the filter? Does the valve body come on and off easily? Any small parts that might fall out of place? I've got some skills, but I've never rebuilt a transmission and if parts start falling off .... I'm in trouble.

    Thanks,

    Eric M.

Do you have your owners manual still? It will have the maintenance list as to when to service what. Usually it's around 50,000k you change the fluid/filter on most cars. Don't flush the system though, just change what fluid drains out of the plug and pan assembly.

As far as the filter location? I'm not too sure on it, best bet it to check out what the kit looks like, and when you drop the pan you can figure out where it goes. That's all I can really think of suggesting lol

Let us know how things go, or if you need help finding a filter/gasket kit.

OH! also if some type of sealant/RTV is required, I would recommend Permatex "the right stuff"

Or Toyota Black if you can get it discounted lol, it's pricey stuff, but it's been said to be better quality than the above RTV.
