Clubprotege 2.0 - discuss, brainstorm, offer ideas!

I've been away a long time.

Ryan was a spectacular choice in a replacement administrator. Who knows where any of the major players that were, are these days. Seems I was correct in my assumption that if I’d placed clubprotege with any of those people, I wouldn’t be typing this today. Even their own forum they departed to make, iMazda.com, has been offline for many months.

Thank you to Ryan and staff, and to all the other people who've continued to visit this forum over the past, what... 8 years now?
It's time now to move forward again.

Ryan, Eric and I are coming up with ideas for revitalizing this forum, and bringing some enthusiasm and punch back where it's sorely needed.
Anyone with enough memory to care would certainly remember me as a lively, go-getter admin hell-bent on helping this forum grow and be prosperous. And frankly, while Ryan and staff have done a GREAT job maintaining the forum and keeping things fresh, the general feeling is, well, this forum is dying.
    And THAT'S why I’m here.

I believe I can help. I believe this forum can be revived, and healthier and stronger than it’s ever been before. I’ve been discussing with Ryan and Eric ways to accomplish just that. But I need the energy of each and every involved member of clubprotege to make changes and help to put our little forum back on the map.

Keep posted on this thread; because over these next few days, I’m going to outline some things I feel would be a great asset in helping clubprotege to effectively regain its prior, well-visited and substantially more active glory.
no idea is off the table.

cool features you've seen elsewhere? something you're dying for clubprotege to have? please, speak up.

I'll list some great ideas I've had, that have led Eric and Ryan to at least so far agree to participate in a wonderful idea to see if we can rebirth these forums to regain some spunk and new members.

And to those who oppose the new course of action, I ask that you give what I have to say a listen before you reject it. I will follow up and say off topic posts be removed.

It’s been a long time. Feels great to be here.
    Dave

Idea 1: tighten up the ranks.

Assign new moderators. find people who are active here who'd be willing to moderate a section. preferably, somethign where people have experience on a matter. inject new life into each and every section by having people excited to be a part of a club revival involved on the forum.

Assign a "new user liaison". an "official" post whore, mind you. someone who'll make it a point to reply intelligently to welcome every new poster. someone who is always here. i'm sure everyone knows a perfect post whore for this position. lol.

Make club business cards/vinyls for moderators and supermods and administrative staff. see a nice protege/mazda? tag it with an invite by leaving a business card or vinyl (un-adhered, lol) for them to throw on thier car. nothing tacky.

    Idea 2: Mobile Apps.
just about EVERYONE owns a smartphone of some kind. the latest version of vBulletin offers not only security fixes, but the ability to make an actual forum "app". i.e. "the clubprotege app" for download from the app store (iPhone iPad ****), and even for android through the android marketplace. i'm personally willing to develop these apps.

accessibility = new users. if you have to always open a browser on a PC to get to your favorite forums, you may be more likely to use one with instant access through a mobile app.

we could even see if it's possible to implement a "priority needs" forum for people who've run into problems, accessible through a single click in a mobile app. (i.e. the shifter fell into the floorboard and i'm on highway 247, please help") for priority response.

free vs paid applications. subscribers only forum accessible through a say, .99 cent paid version without supplemental advertising. access to hidden sections of the forum, etc. abilities to "hang" with the moderation staff and be privy to stuff you couldn't be otherwise. stuff like that.

    idea 3. Facebook signup/login integration:
just about EVERYONE has a Facebook account. how much easier does it make it to sign up/log in if you can log in with your Facebook account?

these just scratch the surface, i'll continue to elaborate on new ideas as this thread progresses, by editing this post. subscribe and stay tuned.

edit: i-pod's a restricted word? LOL

I kinda like the app idea. The priority needs thing might be allirght for last minute stuff and roadside emergencies, but really, what'll prolly be needed is a call to aaa and a towtruck.
If there is a way to set up and maintain a searchable parts availability/interchange database, that isn't a huge PITA, that might be a Good Thing. We've got that one sticky thread but it's a bit unwieldy. the NW mazda club does monthly meetups, maybe we can do regional local stuff as well? Instead of just "show up at this parking garage and look at each others' cars"I always agaitate for meetups that involve more than that. Doesn't seem to happen very often, but sure's hell I'd rather do a meet-up/yak a bit/convoy-down-fun-roads/go-thrash-at-the-kart-track than park and yak.

Well, if you guys are looking for new moderators, I'd be happy to help out. I see that you guys don't have anyone in the motorsports section. Since I'm a racer, I think it would be a good place to moderate. And I could also moderate anywhere else if you want. I know quite a bit about the bg and escorts. (Just don't stick me in the forced induction, engine managment, car electronics, or any chassis more current than the bg, as I don't know much about that stuff. ) I'm happy to help out.

And that business card idea is an awesome one! I see tons of 323's and protege's around town, but never am able to let the owners know about the site.

As for my suggestions, I think we need a "like" button on our home page. Also, make the arcade viewable to everone. right now it's hidden, and not many people know about it. I will list more as I think of it.

Also, don't change to much at one time. I think that if it's changed to much, we might lose that "feel" of the site. And be sure to keep the red box skin if there are more skins added!!!!

With progress sometimes comes sacrifices. The last time the forums were upgraded, the actual "Redbox" was not available. We'll do our best, but if we can't upgrade to rid ourselves of security bugs, anything could happen, including a hacker wiping out the entire forum with known vulnerabilities. This theme might not be compatible with the next version of vbulletin. But we'll do what we can.

I usually use Tapatalk to browse the forum on my phone, but sometimes it doesn't work that well. If there is an app made specifically for CP, I'd definitely get it. Even the paid, ads-free version. If it's possible to moderate from that app, I could do something with the BH section. I'm not sure if I know enough about them, but I know more about the BH chassis than any other model.

As for an upgrade, what about making a personal gallery. Kind of like a vbgallery, but just pics and not as limited. That way we can upload our pics right to the sight instead of Photobucket or some other site then having to insert them here.

How about a built in chat board? That way we don't clutter up threads. I know phbb offers it and I had it enabled on my forum for a while, but there aren't enough people on my forum for it to work, so I disabled it. (Nobody else is ever on at the same time as anyone else. lol)

I don't think we should have "new" mods, but maybe some more mods, or have the current mods do a bit more work...because personally I'm only moderating 3 sections lol, BG interior/exterior and Kia Sephia, as well as the MX6/626 section.

I'm usually on this forum at least an hour a day lol or unless something else is going on in my life (still check in though). So I do not mind having more sections to take care of, I can handle the responsibility as I do care for this forum dearly, and want to help it thrive and improve

We keep trying to bring back rotm, everyone says yeah we gotta do that, then it just sorta falls by the wayside. Why is that? Dunno, but I'll add to the "yeah let's bring it back"...

I think ROTM would be a hard thing to keep up with. I'd like to see at least a featured build or ride on the homepage though; something that could be changed as often as something special comes up.

ROTM needs a dedicated member to actually keep up with it. thats the main problem.

and I need to keep up with updates on the homepage
