Ok I snapped pictures just for you To be honest I am bad at this, I am so focused on what I am doing when i am working I forget about a camera.

Initial impressions of the BP are: more power then the 1.9 (obviously) but it does not feel that much better, plus the idle is still loping, and sometimes it does act like its got more power and then the next time I mash on it its not really that exciting. Just from the difference in the transmission gearing it should feel a little better, but I was expecting more from better trans gearing and about 40 more HP. Something is obviously not right with this thing.

I did manage to keep notes on all the wiring changes, cooling fan will work on hi and lo speed as soon as I get the temp trigger from an automatic car and a radiator for an automatic, all functions of the A/C will work just like OE and it was not really that complicated once I figured it all out. As a bonus, the 1.9L used a WOT cutout relay for the A/C, which can easily be used for the BP, just have to figure out the proper way to trigger it

looks good! power loss like that could be timing related, ignition, or coolant temp sensor

Thanks, hooked up a vacuum gauge today and immediately saw the problem, vacuum was about 11". I checked my cam timing and discovered that I was about 4 teeth clockwise instead of 3. Got it as close as I could but this engine is kind of a pain to time exactly on the marks without having extra hands to keep things from moving on you. It ran better, but there was still a slight lope to it, so retarded the intake a few extra degrees and readjusted the ignition timing till it idles nice and smooth, but I am still only getting 15" of vacuum which I guess is ok, but its on the edge of ok. Time to go fix my exhaust so it no longer sounds terrible. 1.9 to 1.8 exhaust does not match up

Yeah I am too, because I am getting tired of messing with stuff. I am about ready to rip that exhaust cam out and put the intake one back in, almost more trouble then its worth. At this point i would rather spend the money on a set of cams that didnt need clocked 20 different directions to work right.

                    Anyway....

                    Question kids:

Does anyone have any solutions for removing the power steering pump while still running the A/C and still adjust the belt? Currently the only way to adjust and tighten the belt for the A/C compressor is by leaving the P/S pump attached, but since I dont have P/S anymore, I would like to remove it.

                    Any suggestions?

maybe making some sort of pulley to replace the pump? Sort of like an A/c bypass pulley, but for the p/s pump? (Here's the a/c bypass pulley that i'm talking about. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=971204)

Thanks Jack, I had no idea those existed. I found brand new pulleys on rockauto, but no bracket and adjuster, no problem though, I put up a WTB thread for it.

maybe making some sort of pulley to replace the pump?
Only if I have to as a last resort, but it looks like i wont need to go that route.

Well I went through my extensive wiring notes and added the complete wiring How-to and parts list to the first page, so anyone should be able to complete this swap much easier then me from now on. If anyone sees anything I forgot in the parts list or something, just post it up and I will add it to the first page.

Also on other news, after waiting 5 days for the company I ordered from to get it shipped I finally got my Prosport coolant gauge only to discover they sent me the amber/white one instead of the green/white one i ordered, so now I wait longer for a proper temp gauge.

Prosport premium coolant temp gauge install

Yesterday I finally received the correct color coolant temp gauge, initial impressions are good and the final installed product is very nice, with the best part is it matches the stock gauge color nicely. It is nice having something that you know exactly what temp your engine is at, and since the clusters are different from LX to GT regarding the temp gauge, this was a necessary upgrade since the stock gauge is reading incorrectly. The premium gauge has a warning beep and will flash red when the temp gets where you set the gauge to warn you at. I set mine at about slightly less then 210, and the cooling fan kicks on at approx 200-205, so I will know immediately if something is wrong.

To start with I grabbed this a long time ago from the junk yard: I went and found a random car with a random wiring harness exposed and took it. Comes in handy for things like this when you need wire, its cheaper then buying multiple roles of wire, and more then likely you will find wires in it that are the same color as the ones your splicing.

Next I started by extending the wires on the gauge harness, since they are fairly short. Most every wire you will need can be accessed from the harness closest to the OE temp gauge. I added about 15" of wire to the gauge harness since i will be adding another gauge over by the defrost button in the future, and any additional gauges can be daisy chained from one gauge. I chose to solder the wires since they are very small and I didnt have a butt connector that small. Solder the wires and wrap each wire with electrical tape, then wrap them all together to protect them rubbing on anything and causing a short.

There are 3 wires that need to be tapped:
                              cluster harness wire color>>function

BK/Y----12V in run---power from the "meter" fuse
                              BK/DG---Ground
R/BK---Illumination---12V when the park lamps are on

1 wire has to be sourced from the radio harness since it is the closest thing I could find with 12V constant
                              DB/R----12V at all times-----Radio harness

The final wire is for the temp sensor harness. The harness supplied with the gauge contains 2 wires, black and white. I chose this method since I would only have to run 1 wire to the engine bay this way.

I unplugged the BK/O wire from the cluster harness, cut the end off and spliced it into the black wire of the gauge harness. Make sure you unplug the wire from the cluster harness to it does not mess up your gauge reading from being connected to the circuitry in the cluster.

Now that you have all your wires connected up top, you can work on installing the gauge. I simply used a hole saw and carefully enlarged the OE hole in the outer grey part. All I had was a 2" hole saw on hand, so I carefully enlarged the rest with abrasive stone from my porting kit until the gauge fit nice and snug. When this part is finished you will have to remove the bulb and holder from the rear part of the cluster and break off a couple of pieces of plastic right above your warning lights. With the bulb and holder removed it is now also the perfect spot to run your gauge wire thru. *****If you did the LX to BP swap, now is the time to move your "upshift" bulb over to the "fuel cutout" bulb spot, and or replace your tach for the GT version so it has the 7K redline instead of 6K. Not really needed or necessary but I did it since I had the cluster out and like all my stuff like OE as much as possible.*****

I ran the gauge temp harness down near the engine harness grommet and connected to my bulkhead connector I installed when I swapped the BP. Makes running wire to the engine bay much easier. Next I ran the remaining white wire from the gauge sensor harness thru to the engine bay. The excess wire that you cut off will be used in the engine bay and the length was just about perfect for a clean install. I then installed the supplied temp sensor like so:

I started by removing the original temp sensor, and yes i left the cooling system filled up on purpose. the original sensor and new sensor have the same thread pitch, just a slightly different diameter sensor. Since I had a 1/8th NPT tap and the tap is tapered it will start threading into the hole for the original. keep turning until it starts to get hard, then back off a few turns and repeat until the hole is completely rethreaded. The reason I left the cooling system filled up is so that while your tapping the hole, the coolant is kind of like a lubricant and the shavings will flow out with the coolant. When you finish, let the coolant run for a few seconds to let any more shavings out, install some pipe thread sealer/ teflon tape to the sensor thread and install it. Remember it does not need to be that tight to seal, so dont try to crank it down or you will strip the threads out. This procedure is much easier if you remove the cooling fan and have a set of "tap" sockets like i do.

Now for the final wiring, the wire I unplugged for the original temp sensor, I cut the end off and spliced it to the black wire coming out of the sensor. Remember the wire I removed and tapped into behind the cluster? Thats why I did that, since that wire was already going where i needed it. I then connected the white wire from the sensor to the gauge wiring and proceeded to tidy up the wires, running them along the stock harness, and added electrical tape for extra protection where needed. Topped off the cooling system, started the car to check and make sure there were no leaks and the gauge was working correctly.

                              The Final Result:

I'd be damn proud of that gauge placement! Good job man, neat idea.
