    Obd ii klde

Doing some research before I start ordering stuff for a KL swap into my Protege. Since my car is a 1998 model, I need an OBD II engine/ECU/sensors. My questions are, what years and models did the OBD II KLDE come in? Or could I use any year KL with an OBD II ECU, sensors and harness?

    Thanks guys.

Well my recommendations would be to use the 98+ 626 KLG4 engine management system. Uses a coil system instead of the crappy distributor...

I can get it locally here if you're interested, complete ECU to misc sensors that the harness plugs into...so you'd have everything and just need to wire it in to your current fuse box afaik.

That was a quick response, haha, thanks. I'll check around my local yards first to see if there's anything near me. Won't be surprised if there's nothing. The only Protege I've found in the 6+ yards in my area was a 1994.

As for models, I can get that out of a 626 or Millenia since they both used the KL engine, correct? Or were there differences that would make parts of one model incompatible with the other?

You should be able to use the Millenia harness, I don't see why not....just make sure it's at least a 97/98 model as Mazda went through a LOT of ODB1/2 changes in 95/96 lol

The 97 626/MX6/Probe ODB2 system should work too...but still uses the distributor lol....can't recall if the Millenia does or not either....Monoxide would know lol...just give it a few hrs and he'll post I'm sure

I joined over at mazda626.net for more info about the KLG4. I've located one, but need to call he yard.

Anywhoser, instead of starting another thread for one question, I'll put it here. But first, a little background:

When I was planning on rebuilding the Z5, I got a lightweight flywheel for a B6 Miata. Both engines use the same flywheel. Some info on the flywheel I found from one of my other threads:
"Well, I checked www.napaonline.com to compare the Miata and Protege flywheels. I used a 1998 Mazda Protege and all four (1990-1993) Mazda Miatas. They are the exact same thing. Here's some info:

          Part number: NNC 50913
          Number of flywheel teeth: 112
Number of flywheel to crankshaft mounting holes: 6
          Flywheel outer diameter: 11.366"
          Flywheel step: Flat

This information is identical between the Protege 1.5L and the Miata pages. Though, it does not state an engine for the Miata, which is why I used all four years. Doing some more research I found the Miata FAQ which states for 1990-1993 (no link to the 1991 model) that the engine was '1597cc (97cubic inches) or 1.6L.'"

Can anyone get me some equivalent specs? Napa changed their site a while ago so I can't get that info anymore. I'll keep looking myself of course, but if anyone already knows it would be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind, monoxidechild just answered it on 626.net, it won't work. The KL flywheel is eight bolt while the Miata flywheel is six, oh well.

ya no go there man it's KL or K8 flywheels only. I'd recommend getting the K8 (1.8 mx-3 V6) as they are lighter.

What's the weight on those? Will it work with the Miata clutch and pressure plate or will I need to get a whole new kit?

I believe it's 17lbs vs 22lbs for the KL flywheel. Also all G-series clutches are interchangeable, but some come with different diameter friction disks. Such as the KL lol, the B6/BP come with a 215mm disk, but the KL is 225 which uses the complete flywheel surface...also holds more power and dissipates heat a bit better due to the increase in diameter....but yes, will swap over what clutch kit do you have btw?

That's pretty light. I the Miata flywheel I have is 9.9 lbs, chromoly, F1 I think, I'll have to check when I get home in the morning.

Also, the clutch kit is a stage 3, recommended by Ryan compared to the stage 2 I was looking at. It came with the flywheel as a whole kit for a B6 Miata.

When I get home and on a computer I'll be able to post a link or pictures of the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate.

edit: Here's a link to the kit I have: http://gripforce.com/store/index.php...roducts_id=292

hopefully you have better luck with that clutch then the probe guys. if you even mention that clutch on PT, you will have a entire thread turned into a hatred thread. they havent performed well in the past for anyone putting down decent power with the KL. id say upgrade even to a stage 1 southbend clutch before using that. it will hold more power. stage rating be damned. lol

ya southbend is my next choice in clutch after checking out the site. Prices are great for what they can do. You'd probably be able to sell that flywheel/clutch combo on here or a Miata forum if that's the case.
