    Common issues with BP05's?

My car has 123k on it, and a lot of it was towed behind an RV.
Just wondering if the lack of torque below 3k and the sudden awakening at 3k is common on BP's and if there's anything I can do to fix it.. It feels like the timing may be retarded a bit and the power just comes on like that because of it. I have a basically stock BP. Only thing done is a K&N panel filter, small airbox resonator snorkel mod, and a Borla muffler.
    Recently replaced:
    fuel filter
    fuel pump
    plugs
    wires
    plug wires

    Oh, also!
I have this odd high pitched rattling in 1st gear as I approach 3k accel or decel. It's hard to tell where it's coming from because I haven't had anyone near me to diagnose the direct spot it's coming from. I do have Corksport shifter bushings and 3rd link bushings, as well as ES trans mount inserts.
I would guess the throwout bearing, timing idler, or the shifter bushings would be my culprits.. timing and clutch are OEM to my knowledge. Any thought?

Could be the belt being as old as it is.. not sure if it has ever been replaced, as I am the third owner of the car. Thanks for the heads up though! I'll definitely be replacing my timing components when I get my exh/int cam.

I think the car is vac leak free, but I will definitely check on things.
Cat heat shield? I think that's the first place I'll look! Thanks!

Oh, I thought base timing meant the engine itself. So I assume I need to advance my ignition timing a bit?

Yes. I currently have mine at 14 degrees and even in the high heat with A/C on it runs fine on 87 octane, until WOT at about 5K it will start to ping, but I rarely take it up that high with the A/C on to keep the compressor clutch from cycling too much and my cool air getting warm.

When it was a little cooler like about 100 and below, I was able to run 16 degrees advance with no pinging at all.

It's nice that you live in a very hot city so I get a good idea of how far I can push my timing. I don't have a timing gun to play with--how difficult is it to just jump the 10 and ground in the diagnostics box and clock my distributor? I guess I would be 'wingin it'. How far back should I clock it for 2 deg (more) advance?

Its easy to jump the pins in the diagnostic port but idk how far equals what timing. You can wing it, but its better to just get a timing light. Orielly has them for like 20-30$

They dont cost much anymore since they are not needed that much these days.

It's normal. At 3000 the car wakes up, at least it was like that for all of my Escorts.

At what point does the vics open? Thats probably that "oomph" hes feeling at 3k maybe?

Advancing your timing with give you more bottom end tq, but at 3k or so, it will probably still catch speed like its doing now.

VICS is at 5k or so and yes even with advanced timing it still has that surge. Mine seems to be at 4K but it might have something to do with the extintake cam and my cam timing

how noticeable is the difference ? every car/ engine has a powerband. you seemed to be describing rough/ underpowered below 3k and running fine above 3k
