Different sized bolts everywhere; having to line up TDC via a hold in the transmission looking at the flywheel and somehow the cam pulley at the same time; wire looms with no connectors that cross the front of the engine, and get in the way; the bulkiest passenger side engine mount I have ever seen that is impossible to remove without every timing component off, and the engine on an extreme angle; access to any turbo related component requires mirrors and swearing; tons of fragile little clips and connectors that are more ridiculous than any vehicle I have ever worked on; everything is bolted to everything else.

It went back together much quicker than it came apart. Taking it apart was like a jigsaw puzzle. I'm sure if I was more familiar with the platform, I'd have wasted far less time trying to figure out what to do to get where I needed.

Edit: Those "valve reliefs" on the pistons aren't supposed to be there. Lol.

I feel your pain. A good friend of mine that has spent his entire career so far working on BMW's says that VW/Audi is the worst German car to work on, but if you include other makes Land Rover is pretty close, and the icing on the cake is they are absolute junk.

The car seems like it's good quality, just not designed to be worked on. None of the parts seem cheap, like when I work on my girlfriend's Alero. That thing is obviously junk. My BMW is a dream to work on compared to this, but it's an old one that was meant to be fixed at home. It even came with a full tool kit in the trunk that could be used for most any basic repair.

One thing about it though, if you worked on them as a career you could work on anything. lol

Yeah VW does seem to have decent reliability and overall build quality. I changed a lower intake manifold on an 05 Buick Rendezvous one time and.....never again. Linear engineering. Everything piled on top of everything else and all connected to each other with a hidden bolt or clip

is this a late-90s 2.slow Jetta (like MKIII or whatever) we're talking about? I had to do crash repair on one of those and it was complete misery the whole time.

hooked up the VSS, jumpered the park/neutral wiring (and by jumpered I mean "soldered that **** together"), finished the exhaust, tightened the bolts for the trans mount, hooked up some more wiring (alternator and whatnot), filled it with oil and coolant, threw in a battery on a charger...

and discovered that there's a wiring issue. as soon as I hooked up power, the headlights did a little dance, and all the brake lights and parking lights turned on. I intended to ignore that just to see if I could get it to run (and thus discover other problems) but the battery didn't have enough juice.

dudes who are better at wiring than me: sounds like a short, yes? only wiring I touched was for the 5-speed swap (which shouldn't cause this problem) and I guess the bull****-ass cheap alarm that every one of these ****ing cars seems to have. I'm going to hunt for disconnected wires tomorrow (possibly with the help of a wiring schematic if I can find one), but is there something else I should be looking for? I am terrible at diagnosing electrical problems and want to burn this piece of ****.

Ugh, I hope for your sake it's not caused by a hack job alarm install. You may have a bit of work ahead of you to fix that.

The main thing keeping me from buying a TDI wagon is how horrible VWs are to work on.

Everything was fine till I pulled the car apart, so I'm hoping its something stupid.

hmm. unhooked the tail lights to keep them from melting the housings, when I disconnected the wiring for the third brake light, the sidemarkers went out and the headlights went back down. plugged in one of the tails to see if maybe it was just the third brake light and everything lit back up.

when I swapped in the clutch and manual brake pedal, I used the sensors that were on the pedals... I'm wondering if maybe the brake light switch is bad, so I'll try to find the one that was originally on the car.

I also bled the brakes, figured out what's wrong with the clutch hydraulics (turns out it does, in fact, need a crush washer at the slave connection) and put it back on the ground. was going to push it outside and try to jump it with one of the other cars, but there was a thunderstorm and the car doesn't have a hood right now.

well, it fired and ran pretty roughly for about 10 seconds before shutting itself off and not firing again. gonna try to sort out the disty timing tomorrow, seems like it's off a bit. doesn't leak anything and sounds real healthy when it cranks, so it's getting there...
