    Kev's JDM 1997 Protege

After much headache and being jerked around by shipping companies, the car formerly owned by txmzdspd2gen is now officially mine. It arrived here yesterday evening while I was at work so my parents took care of the delivery.

I was going to check it out last night after work, but my dad said the alarm is very touchy and I didn't feel like waking the neighbors. So this morning I took a nice walk around and took a few photos.

He included the original black plastic gauge surround and console trim pieces. I'll probably swap those back on sice I'm personally not a fan of the silver paint.

I think the driver tried disconnecting the alarm siren since it would go off over every bump in the road. He ended up just disconnecting the battery and probably forgot to put the intake back together.

Got the intake back together and took off all the blue wire loom. Again, not a fan of it and I think it looks much cleaner without it. I'll also swap my Mazdaspeed strutbar onto this and put that DC Sports bar on my '98.

And my trunkful of goodies. Original front bumper with all support stuff, steering wheel, grille, headlights, interior trim pieces, hood scoop seal thing, and rear bumper skirts. I thought they were genuine, but I haven't found any part numbers on them and it looks like they're made of fiberglass. I have a project in mind for those in the future.

I was going to take her for a quick ride around the neighborhood this morning, but the battery is dead. I hooked up a charger and the alarm went nuts. The remote didn't work to shut it off and there's no way to simply disconnect the siren. I ended up snipping one of the wires and will probably leave it like that until I can either get this remote working or get a new one.

That's it for now. It's 90+ degrees out already and like 600% humidity so I'm not sure how much I'll get done before work. But I do have tomorrow off and will probably spend the majority of my day with the car.

Congrats on finally getting it. I agree with you on the dash pieces. Silver and tan doesn't look good together. Everything else looks amazing

          Thanks.

First major problem encountered already. Car won't start. After the battery finished charging it had about 10 volts in it. Put everything under the hood back together and it went down to about 2 volts. I was going to swap in the battery from my '98, but I have to leave for work soon so it'll have to wait until tonight or tomorrow. Got the remote to lock and unlock the doors, though. Still needs to test the rest of the buttons, but I'll need a fresh battery for that.

          Until tomorrow, my friends.

              Haha, yeah.

Anyway, I'm going to have to wait a little longer til I can get her on the road. I never got a bill of sale from the previous owner and his wife filled out the wrong spot on the title. I sent them an email earlier today and I'll call their house phone tomorrow if I don't get a reply. I would just text her, but I don't know if they're still out of the country or not. If they are, I hope they come back soon Got her insured, though

Well, I got her running today. Swapped the battery from my '98 into this one and took her around the neighborhood. I didn't play with the radio or anything, but the switch for the Cibie fog lights is just dangling beneath the dash next the the hood latch. I don't like the look of it and the switch gets hot as hell when the lights are on. Ideally, I'd like to have the foglights come on when the parking lights/city lights come on and have the city lights as daytime running lights. I'm not sure what the wiring looks like underneath everything, but it'll be a while before I can get her registered so I've got time. The exhaust is MUCH louder than I was expecting and I hope I don't get pulled over for it. While in the process of swapping batteries, I also swapped strutbars.

Out with the old, in with the new!

Now this is a (almost) proper engine bay. I need to get rid of that blue rubber stuff on the hood rod and I'll probably repaint that battery tie down black.

It's humid as hell out right now, so I'm going to grab some lunch in the comfort of my air conditioning before I get a new battery.

Alright, damage report time. Unfortunately these were all pretty much listed on the bill of lading so I can't attribute any of it to transport damage. Anyway:

Driver-side side skirt has a crack right in the middle. Not all the way down, but about half way from top to bottom.

Some scrapes on the bottom of the front lip. Probably from the previous owner getting in and out of his driveway. There's a picture on his photobucket showing the angle between his driveway and the road.

Mounting bracket for the driver-side foglight broke. Wiggles a little bit, but still fairly solid in the bumper.

And it appears he was worried about the scoop catching the wind or something. Looks like he drilled holes along the bottom edge in the back to alleviate some of the air pressure that would build up inside the scoop.

Also, the corner closest to the camera isn't bolted down. I'll have to take it off and find out a way to get a bolt in there.

So it appears most of these can be fixed with some bondo or some other putty or bonding agent. Not going to worry too much since it'll be a driveway ornament until I can get her registered. If anyone has any suggestions for how to fix any of the above problems, don't hesitate to offer your insight.

Unfortunately not. But he did give me the seal thing that goes under the hood. Only problem would be creating an intake to actually use it.

It's for a diesel so I'm assuming it's supposed to go over a top mount intercooler.

Figured. And I think I can get this one back to normal, but I'll keep that in mind.

Got the silver painted gauge and console surrounds replaced with the original black pieces. Still need to remove the paint from the ash tray and the center piece over the steering column. Also removed the white gauge faces so now I can tell what speed I'm going. Well, after I redo the needles. Right now it idles at 3,000 and standing still I'm going about 35 mph, hahaha.

Pictures are on my Facebook, but I'll post them here after dinner.

                          Alright, photo time:

                          No more white gauges.

I'll have to take those needles back off and put them on while everything is at zero. Apparently what I've read about Mazda gauge clusters doesn't apply to these. Oh well, more reasons to play with the car.
