A little update on the airbox. I pretty much got the cardboard template figured out, but it sits farther forward than I thought. So the top portion that seats against the rubber duct will have to be moved forward which will cause the front half inch or so of the filter to be covered, not a huge loss in my eyes. I also started Bondo-ing the inside to smooth it all out. Here's what I've done so far.

I rounded the bottom to help with a few clearance issues and to at least make it look somewhat efficient.

I wanted to make the bottom rounder than it is, but forgot. I'll just have to build up the Bondo in that area more. I'm waiting for this layer to cure before I go in with some more. I'll probably get this finished up tonight and start the fiberglass this coming weekend. This will be a pain in the ass to sand.

I hope so. And I think it'll have to be a two-piece mold. Then I'll just have to fiberglass the two halves together.

And if anyone else has seen my thread about building copies, I might have to scratch that offer. Unless I can find some weather stripping or something that will work to seal the hood to the airbox.

I cut it into a two-piece mold and put a little more Bondo in it. This is where I'm leaving it until Saturday.

Just mailed the paperwork back to the previous owner. Just another two weeks before I can actually drive this thing.

Just to be clear you have a 1998 protege, that looks almost exactly like this one that you cant register and the other one is registered and tagged?
Because I sure didn't swap out the plates on my proteges even though they were 5 years apart.

You're putting a good amount of effort into the air box, but I'd honestly focus on fitting a half shaft set up because the long axle passenger side sucks and will grind on the cross member if you drive aggressive enough. I made a thread with all the part numbers a long time ago. Unsure if you fixed your fog light switch problem. The MPV and some other cars have a proper oriented fog light switch that you can use. IIRC you can follow the bha wiring guide with it as well.

The side skirts were cut for shipping. No one will buy rear bumper lips.

I also didn't realize that poor car was sticker-ed so much. And when your non-functioning hood scoop needs to be butchered because it might rattle itself off well that points to all sorts of oversights.

On a serious note I imagine you aren't going to drive in the rain with your current ram intake idea as it would be a good way to decrease filter life as well as possible maf life depending on the amount of moisture and the fact it would be funneling down into it.

Wow, seriously? Where do I start?

First off, I am not going to just switch plates from my '98 to the '97. I'd rather do everything properly and legally if you don't mind (though you made it pretty clear you do).

Second, yes I am putting a lot of effort into the airbox. And honestly, I'm not worried about the rain, the filter is only $12 so it's not a huge loss even if I do have to replace it more often. And I've checked with my local parts stores as well as Rockauto and none of them can seem to get me an intermediate shaft. I don't know why, but they don't have it. So I'll be sticking with the longer axle for now, there's no sign of it hitting anything so, again, something I'm not worried about right now.

Third, no one will buy rear bumper lips? I'm pretty sure I already have three people interested. Two want the lengthened USDM version and the third wants a JDM set. Just because you don't want any doesn't mean no one else will.

Fourth, what are you talking about with the hood scoop needing to be "butchered?" The only thing I need to do is fill the drill holes in the back, that I'm assuming are there because the previous owner was worried about it catching too much wind and ripping off, and putting in a new bolt in the back-driver side corner. No butchering necessary. The only thing that will actually be cut is the hood and if you look underneath, the support bracing offers the perfect template to cut a hole for the scoop. No guessing, no measuring, no butchering.

The only positive piece of information you offered was about the MPV fog light switch and I'll look into that. As for everything else, why try to bring someone down like that? It's not happening. I'm not letting what anyone says, I don't care who they are, I'm done trying to please everyone else on the planet while I let myself suffer. If you don't like what I'm doing, fine, don't read my thread. Your negativity is not welcome here.

Agreed, Kitty's post was pretty harsh, especially considering you've just recently acquired the car, and haven't even been able to enjoy it yet.

Drain holes could solve that if it'll be that big of a problem.

Pulled the scoop off and taped up the holes to hopefully prevent any rain from getting in.

Also looks like I'll need to put a new stud in the back corner. Apparently this thing never had one. Oh well, it needs some work done anyway.

Nah, little JB Weld and a bolt and it'll be good to go. I'll have to drill another hole in the hood for it, though.
