323Permin is at it again ... just can help myself :0) 1991 LX Winter Rally Mode...

So, for winter last year I bought a little stock white 323, auto tragic 1.6 SOHC ($600.00) cleaned it up and drove it for the winter /spring. Then sold it for a nice profit.

Then I figured I would look around for another winter car and work on it through the summer so it would be ready for this winter... So it begins Ha ha ha ....

Found a 1991 323 LX model 1.6 B6, 5 spd 206,000 km ( which in this trim level we dont find many here in BC ) black paint with tan interior.

Hell for $300.00 bucks what can be wrong. DOH !!!

It fired up right away, drove it and the first thing I figured is it needed at least one CV joint replaced and the exhaust was hooped !!

Well months have passed and I am deep into the project ... all the profit I made from the white 323 has been sunk into the new black 323.

I was surprised ( well not really ) that it needed alot more work from first glance.

I have done a full mechanical tune up and then some !

-New Spark plugs ( NGK )
-New Spark Plug wire set ( NGK )
    -New Cap/Rotor
    -New Air Filter
    -New Fuel Filter
    -New O2 sensor
-New Tranny and engine oil change/filter
    -New Radiator
-New upper and lower Rad hoses
    -New Reman front calipers/pads
-New Front Sway Bar End Links
-New Rear Drums, Pads, Wheel Cylinders and Hardware
-New ( both side ) Drive Axles and Tranny Seals
    -New Valve cover Gasket
    -New Bronze Oilite Shifter Bushings
    -New OEM Power mirrors

And some other items I have picked up or had from the other builds are going on the car.. like :

    - Front OEM Strut Bar
    - Ultra Race Rear Strtut Bar
    - MX3 lower rear tie bar
    - Rear GT Sway Bar and New end links, Poly bushings
    - Full Set of newer Struts with Protege GT springs ( GT ones have a higher spring rate than normal 323 or proteges )
    - Full JDM GTX 3 hole front bumper and headlights and JDM grill, JDM rear bumper.
    - 4 Front Rally lighting array ( to be fabricated )
    - Front skid plate ( to be fabricated )
    - EDM rear hatch fog garnish
    - Upper Led Hatch spolier
    - the 1993 Mazda GT ( Canadain model ) 14" aluminum spoked wheels with studded snowies :0)

The vision I am having for this car is a 1991 GTX clone from the exterior visual, just not 4wd or turbo'd :0(

I think these parts will help obtain the GTX look ..

On a side note, a buddy and I are going to start going to the local autocross's. If we have any luck at it we may need to come up and run with you and adam.

Started the rear end tear down and found the usual rusty situation in the upper strut areas.. plus a surprize. Busted spring .

doesnt matter anyways as I am putting in the Protege GT strut/springs from my other car into it.

I went to town and cleaned up the rear strut areas on the body and its all shiny and black.

              Pics to follow .... :0)

As you can see the springs from the 323 and different from the GT protege springs.

So finally feeling better after two weeks of being sick

While I was laying low surfed craigslist and found a great deal on a set of 14" wheels with almost brand new Hankook tires.

Going to run these while its still fall and mild.

Then change over to the mazda GT 14"'s and studded snowies.

Looks good Rob... I got all the rear suspension parts pulled apart... All though the rear spindle bolts are sized in the outter control arms... I wasn't able to free them up with out the possibility of ruining the control arm bushing..

                      Current Update :

The car is back on all fours again ( Temporarily ) I am going to take it through our emissions testing ( Aircare ). Should pass with flying colours :0)

I have all of the GT suspension installed , new swaybar endlinks installed, MX-3 Tie bar installed, GT rear sway bar installed , Front and Rear Strut bars installed.

When I was doing the install of the rear sway bar I never realized that the LX rear sway bar was a cheap hollow one.

It looks identical to the Protege GT one I have, same O.D., but the GT one is solid , not hollow.

So this should help abunch in the handling. On top of everything else thats been installed.

Once I had everything installed the new wheels went on.... and wow what a difference a set a wheels does for a car....

Plus the car now sits way higher. Those GT springs sure do raise the car up .. just what a Rallyish car needs :0)

Here are a few cell phone pics late in the evening, will have more ( better ) shots tomorrow

Ok .. some better pictures of the Winter Project Rally Car ... along with a comarision to the Summer Daily Driver ( Protege GT )

Next on the list of to do's is all four corners get bigger " RallyArt " mud flaps. Have three spots of rust on the car to repair.

Replace the windsheild and drivers & passenger windows. The last owner scratch the sh*t out of the windows inside and out with something.
And I cant fix that :0( ... will get the a better set of door windows next week from the wreckers. The windsheild will be done professionally.

And if I have time re-re the headlights/turn signals to the JDm setup.

Once thats done the Protege can come off the road for the fall/winter and rest peacefully in the garage next to with the Red Princess.

Then here is a comparison to the lowered Protege GT and the 323 with the factory GT Struts/Springs....

There is quite a difference in height ... lots of ground clearance for the snow :0) ... bring on the snow Weeee .... !!
