    Big Brake swap frustration

im trying to find info on the galant rotor and escort GT caliper upgrade but am finding only scatterd info.im new to BFs but not to car modification. ive been reading and searching non stop both on here and google for 2 hours now. i get that the "ears" have to be cut off of the hub face but does this swap only work with GT/GTX front knuckles? if so are there other caliper options?

that being said here is my goal:

i have a base model 88 323 sedan. im planning on dropping my ~300HP turbo BP from my old Ford Festiva into it. i would like a some decent braking power. this was a planned budget build but i have a feeling it will become my new pride and joy. any help is appriciated.
i know its a piece of crap... but im still faster...

I have some info on it on TeamCapri http://www.teamcapri.com/forum/index...ic,2720.0.html

I've done a couple of these so far, message me about it if you want. I have all the SST's to set the bearings correctly now.

Will it work on the base model? Yes I'm pretty certain it will. The rotors are smaller but the hubs/knucks are the same IIRC. You might need to screw with or swap do a different dust shield around the rotor. Or just swap in XR2 knuckles those should bolt on directly

I believe that there is a page on the 323gtx yahoo group that gives you all the part numbers. I haven't been on there in a while but I know it's still up. Rocketman, the link you posted has another link on that page but it's a dead end. Do you have any other resource?

and in case it won't let you in,
          <paste>

My mate Gavin Anderson and myself came up with this upgrade by reading
though the books and finding a suitable match for the discs and calipers
using parts available in NZ. NZ has had Mitzi Galant VR4 from 1988 to 2000
with 3 to 4 different model shapes and many different brake setups.

          Discs
The disc diameter is 256mm, not 266mm or 276mm.

In NZ they are from the 1988-89 Mitzi Galant VR4.
In US they are from the Pre 10/1989 Mitzi Galant GSX, from what I have heard
          through the egroup.

          Calipers
The correct caliper has "22" and "14V" moulded into it.
Make sure the calipers have the flexible brake hoses still connected, this
will allow you to connect them straight into your existing brake lines.

In NZ they are from the:
          1990's Mazda Familia (323) GTX
          1990's Ford Laser GTX
          1990's Mazda Familia (323) GT (1800cc NA)
          1990's Ford Laser TX3i (1800cc NA)

In US they are from the:
          1990's Mazda MX3
          1990's Mazda Protégé (323) LX twin-cam
          1990's Mercury Tracer LTS twin-cam
          1990's Ford Escort GT twin-cam
1990's Ford Escort wagon or coupe

          Pads
There are two pad sizes available for this caliper, the bigger size fits and
          is therefore the best option.
Smaller size are from the non turbo models.
Bigger size are from the turbo models.

          Wheels Studs
          Longer wheel studs are recommended.

In NZ we used Mitzi Lancer EVO5 studs, only because we could get them for $2
          each.

In US I have heard of 2nd Gen RX7 studs being used, but keep an open mind
and have a look around for something suitable at the right price.

          Hubs
The hub that the disc sits over will need turning down a bit. When you get
the discs you will then know how much to turn them down to (I can't
remember). Do this step once you have removed the original disc (Makes sense
          really).

Other than that, use high quality brake fluid and pads, and enjoy awesome
braking ability without cracking your discs!

Good luck everyone with the upgrade,
          Cheers,
          Pete.

Pull the dust shields...they will not fit anyway with the Galant rotors. Use the 266mm rotors. Not sure about the base knuckles but they should work.

Its probably been stated and I know I've seen it but... do you run a .25" spacer in back now that the fronts have been pushed out that far?

I did, yes. I just recently finished the rear brakes so now no more spacers.

Because you're not running manly-man wheels.

LOL.... I too did NOT use spacers in the rear, but.... then again, I never thought about that until reading this thread. Personally, I was rubbing tires in the rear even without spacers so I guess I must have been running a different kind of "manly-man" wheels....

+3 on the 266mm rotors. At least, I think I used those. Don't remember.... getting old. I was the "old man" on the MP323.com website. Notsure about now.

With 205/50/15 installed on my car they rubbed the rear struts. I didn't have that issue with 195/50/15.

does going to the big brake option require at 15" wheel size (or greater)?
