Can you eliminate the joint shaft with the longer cv axle on a 97 Protege?

I have a 97 Protégé LX 1.5L 5spd. I would like to know if I can eliminate the joint or intermediate shaft by installing the longer right axle that is available? I have been able to find the joint shaft only at dealers for around $200 and could save that with the longer shaft. Anyone out there tried this? Thanks

I posted this as a new member, but I thought this is a better place.

You can use the longer axle in place of the short axle/intermediate shaft combo, but the int. shaft is used to reduce torque steer. For better performance/handling, I'd keep the short axle and intermediate shaft.

Thanks for your reply. The only play I found is where the two shafts are connected and the intermediate shaft is expensive, so that's why I thought about the longer shaft option.

You can replace the bearing in the half shaft, I had to do that to the one I had. That's the only moving part on the assembly that could have any "play" and I don't see why one wouldn't go that route instead of throwing on an inferior part. Plus it makes passenger side axles swaps a breeze.

with a stock 1.5 i wouldn't be too worried about torque steer or breaking axles/replacing them often
