    Buying engine Tips

    I have a 2002 Protege ES. Manual Transmission
    The engine seized up so I need to replace

    Engine: FS - DE

    Looking for replacements I Find alot of engines wit
    AT Only?

    I am new to this so my dumb question is:
    Are not the engine and Trans interchangeable? Meaning if I have a manual trans and all the parts won't a Mazda engine same model year etc fit?

    Welcome to CP.

    All FS-DE engines are the same but the ones used with ATs have some different programming in the PCMs than those used with MTs.

      Thanks. HOw would that affect the PCM? Is there a work around?

        Your welcome. Not having an AT car I don't know what the PCM differences could be. You could try to find a PCM from a wrecked FS-DE engined car or maybe a Mazda dealer could reprogram one for you, if that's possible?

          An engine that came from the factory with an auto trans may not have the crank drilled to accept a pilot bearing. I have not had one apart, so I don't know if it is an issue or not.

            Does any one have any experience doing this? Kind of desperate to get my car back on the road. It is my daily driver. I think I found a good engine good price good warranty, but
            it says it only fits AT Mazda protege. Can't seem to get a straight answer from Mazda dealer.

              This is the engine I looking at. Any input/feedback would help
              again I have a protege with a M/T but this says it only "Fits" A/T

              What issues would I encounter??

                    Just go to car-parts.com and find a long block.

                    Buy the cheapest local engine. And swap any problematic parts with what you already have.
