    !!! FS---BNIB MX-3 Koni Red Inserts !!!

Ladies and gentleman, this is for real. These are the last set of brand new Koni inserts for the MX-3 stock struts [jeremyclarkson] IN THE WORLD [/jeremyclarkson]. These were found on a high shelf, deep the bowels of Koni's warehouse in Holland, flown across the ocean, and through several intermediaries, have landed in my possession. They have been confirmed as the last set available as the product has been discontinued by Koni.

Those of you who may be unfamiliar with these take note. These are inserts for your stock strut housings. There are instructions for gutting your stock struts and replacing the internals with these inserts. It's a fairly straightforward procedure. These inserts can be rebuilt by Koni if they should ever need it.

These are about as unobtanium as it gets. One pair of fronts and one pair of rear inserts with all accompanying hardware/instructions from Koni. I've been told that Koni can convert these into single adjustable inserts for a price. As someone who has run Koni suspension, including singe and double adjustable inserts, let me be the first to say you will not be disappointed with these.

I assume you are referring to the Sport or Race inserts...

      Direct from Koni's FAQ:

Q: What is the difference between KONI Special (red) and KONI Sport (yellow)?

A: The KONI Special (red) has been engineered to maximize the ride comfort with good handling performance for each vehicle application. The KONI Sport (yellow) typically starts at a higher initial valving baseline to give a sportier feel and work on vehicles with higher performance parts. In some instances, KONI will only offer a Special or Sport valving and not both. Some modern cars come from the factory with higher tech suspension systems and wheel/tire packages so they would move directly into the Sport range, however they are still valved to give a comfortable ride with very good handling capabilities.

The Race inserts are designed with a little more aggressive dampening and are adjustable, but to my knowledge there are no Race or Sport inserts that will fit stock strut housings. You would need custom strut housings as the universal inserts have to be used in housings utilizing a gland nut at the top to hold the insert in. These inserts are held in with a bolt from the bottom.

These can be revalved by Koni to essentially make them single adjustable Race inserts. That would give you the exact same shock dampening setup I ran on my FSP 323 last year with up to 800lbs springs.

Confirmed for "Yes you can have them modified/rebuilt to be adjustable and to Yellow/Race specs." These are exactly what the shocks in the Escort started out as.

I have a set of the 8611's in custom housings. They use a gland but but the bottom has a hole to access the rebound adjuster. So that knob on the bottom is confusing. BTW nice deal on these inserts for a quick and easy upgrade that is virtually PNP.

The 8610s don't have an adjuster on the bottom. Some of them have a threaded extension down there to bolt them to the housing...for the same purpose as the gland nut on top. The Sport inserts Koni sells for the E36 BMW front struts are done exactly like these inserts where you drill a whole in the bottom of the stock housing to run a bolt through and hold the insert in. I did that on one of my M3s and it was a really easy procedure.

I have AWR housings that originally had 8610s in them. When I switched to the double adjustable 8611 inserts I had to drill the hole out in the bottom of the housings to fit the adjuster. I also own a set of Advance Design double adjustable coilovers that Ground Control used to sell. With those both of the adjustments are done at the top. I'm thinking of putting them in my MX-3. The valving for those is also an insert that will come out of the housings with a gland nut. The valving is shot on them so I'm thinking of tossing the inserts and converting the housings over to run the Koni Race inserts which are much shorter. I can then lower the car more.
