Fist of all I went and dug the 2 other disty's I had out of my scrap metal pile and started to look them over. I didnt understand at the time when I fist tried to start the car that there were different disty's depending on car/year so thats what prompted me to go take another look. When I bought parts for this car on Rockauto I bought the cap and rotor for a 95 MX6 since thats what KL I was swapping in the car. I combined that with the cleanest/newest looking disty and of course it didnt start the car since the coil was never connected to the cap in this config so I thought the disty was bad, next up was the 95 MX6 disty + plus new cap and car still would not start, again I thought it was a bad disty but it was due to the 95 being different internally. Last I tried the nasty looking MX3 disty with a good cap on it. of course it started the car and I presumed it was the only good one of the bunch. Fast forward to today and I took the nice clean disty I had initially thought was bad and put the CORRECT cap on it. The car started and seemed like it ran much better but now I still seem to have a pretty rough idle which seemed like a misfire. I decided to pull the fuel rails out and swap them with another set in case I had something up with the injectors, but first I decided to bench test the ones I removed and it turns out I had one injector that was not working when current was applied from my injector machine. No noises--nothing. I removed that one and stuck it in the ultrasonic cleaner while the machine tried to pulse it at a simulated 6K RPM and finally after about 20min of this it started working again. Reinstalled the injector in the rail and put it back in the car. The car idles smooth now and on my test drive it pulls from low RPM and wakes up at about 3K and pulls nicely to redline with no stuttering or breaking up.

For some reason the brake warning light came on while driving it and it seems like it has an oil leak coming from the back of the pan thats pretty significant but at least its running and running well. Since I have to drop the exhaust to reseal the oil pan I may as well install the headers and downpipe I have here for it while I am at it.
        Great work!

I had actually cleaned them before but since I have no way to back flush side feed injectors I can't get the simple green solution all out and I think it causes them to stick if they sit too long before using them. I had some other injectors I have cleaned for myself that I didn't back flush/retest and they all got stuck before.

Google ultrasonic injector cleaning. I have a machine that allows me to test injectors and clean them and it's also a service I offer to CP members.

Glad to hear you got it figured out.

The headers you have are they for an mx3? Or a 626/mx6? The 626/mx6 headers don't clear the mx3 subframe they need to be modified. If you look at my build thread you should be able to spot how I modified my obx headers.

No they came off a probe. I will go look at your thread and hopefully this does not require welding since I don't have a welder yet.

I looked at my build thread i didn't see any good ppictures of my headers.

I did have to weld though. I extended the 2 pipes from each bank so the rear collector flange would clear the subframe

Is the MX3 subframe that different from 323/Protege/Escort?

Probe headers cleared my Escort subframe just fine.

I am not sure what the differences are. I know the obx ones I have didn't fit when the swap was in an mx3 and the same clearance was needed bow that it's in the 323. This isn't the first time I had heard of 626/mx6 headers not fitting with out small modifications

I took the car to emissions today and it failed HC and CO. NOX was excellent at 1.45/2.50
                      HC was 1.89/1.00
                      CO was 15.35/12.00

I assume this is likely due to the fact I am running it on the K8 ECU and VAF which from my reading causes the car to run too rich. Anybody have an early KL ECU and VAF?

By the skin of it's teeth it passed. I just put one of the GTX's on a Hagerty policy....thanks to the last governor that signed a bill ...no emission tests for collector and classic cars with that type insurance. I will ask around on the car for you James.

Thanks Clay. How old does the car have to be to do what you did with the GTX?

I wish I could put the Escort on that policy and skip emissions.
