Brake upgrades part 1: developing an OEM size 2 piece brake rotor

This thread will give details and serve as a discussion spot for the 2 piece rotor upgrade I have been working on. The other thread I had was starting to get confusing since I talked about so many different things.

Why a 2 piece rotor and what are the benefits?
#1 reason and the most important is weight savings. This rotor has the potential to save a minimum of 3 lbs per side compared to standard BG 10" rotor. This would be like putting lighter weight wheels on the car and since its unsprung weight like the wheels are, it has more benefit than removing sprung weight from the car.
#2 reason is better heat dissipation and less chance of warping rotors if you overheat the brakes since both the ring and hat can expand independently of each other without stress.

I saw your message just now. I currently have a quote from a manufacturer in China to build them, but the quantity would have to be at least 50 pieces, at $50 each. Another company will do a lower number but the price will obviously go up. This really is the only thing holding me back right now is the lack of interest. This is far cheaper than anything Wilwood has.

Do you have someone local doing the prototypes? If it doesn't work out I would be willing to send you some money for the CAD files so I could get some made.

The stuff I had pictured was 3D printed in PLA plastic just for test fitting by a guy I found on Craigslist. I need to have the same guy revise some of the dimensions for me since I found some fitment issues with the ones I have.

How much do you think your guy would make them for?

Well if we can get 10 people at $50 each for a deposit and $50 upon completion then I will go through with it.

A detail I forgot to mention is that they quoted me that price for the hats to be made in 7075-T6. Wilwood hats are made in 6061-T6

is this $50 per corner, i presume? for a 2 piece rotor? that's a helluva deal if so.

No that price is only for the hats per corner. You buy the wilwood rotor and hardware kit.

All said and done you would be into this for $250 which is about half the price you would pay for a similar setup with wilwood hats and wilwood does not make a hat that would work for this application.
