Because it's no different than hogging out the head ports another 1mm, which won't benefit a street engine.

I have nothing to back this up right now other than my opinion of course so take it for what it's worth.

Whoa whoa whoa. Completely wrong thought pattern. You increase flow at a exponential rate w oversizing the valves. Were talking +"x" cc's more for every point in the lift range. Hogging the port effects flow velocity and pattern. The valve size could be thought of in terms of any other valve/butterfly. Since the majority derived velocity doesnt change(intake manifold runners) youll be able to get more into the motor at every point.

I'm using post #2 as the reference for the work log. I'll link back to it as needed.
I'll ask about the +1 valve grind but----, this is still going to be my daily. I don't want to go too crazy.

That cylinder damage looks very rough, like it may have overheated. I would keep a spare block in mind when you take it into the machine shop.

Good call. It did overheat. I'm going to have the block inspected before I buy anything or do anything else.

edit- I was on my way back from the airport on the freeway and home was 5 miles away. I kept turning off the engine to coast when I could. Everything seemed fine, until the next day when I went to start it up to run some errands. The head appears to be true still. No warping. The cylinder was going south long before the head gasket failure, or maybe the two were related. It had been running terrible for a while so I did a compression check. In any case, the overhaul was needed.

Same thing happened to my built B6T. It overheated pretty bad a few times in the summer. I tore it down and found the same scoring on the walls of #2 and 4. It was deep, but I got it to .040 over without issue.

After working on it for most of yesterday, I have the engine out and on the stand. Getting the engine out of the car after the top end has been removed has been far easier. I was able to pry the axles out from the top no hassle. I can see heater hose configuration and will be able to address issues where it looks like circulation might be restricted. I also figured out that if I use a bottle jack to push the bolts up through the rear motor mount holes as I'm raising the engine with the hoist, I don't have a problem with those bolts hanging up. (duh) Anyway, more pics.

Anyone know the size of the nut holding the oil cooler assembly? I'm sure the shop will be able to remove it but it's a loosed end. Also, it probably would have been a good idea to remove the rear engine plate before putting it on the stand. No real problem there. Mike said he's going to tank it so it's clean when it goes into the boring machine. That means anything left on it not steal is history. I'm a little worried about the oil dipstick sleeve but I don't know how to get that thing out.

There are a few pics that show issues. I really wonder what kind of problems those issues caused me? Also, cleaning the leaves out of the SMIC scoop just seemed like a good idea. No pic of that. Yea, I know, I should upgrade. One thing at a time.

I'm thinking about doing a little painting. It'll never be easier than now. I should also upgrade the wire that I'm using for the fuel pump workaround. I didn't know when I did that mod it was going to be forever. I don't think it's ever caused me any problems though, and I think it's only the voltage for the switch. The wire to the relay is much more robust.

Cluthc is Spec 2+ with 60K. Holding up pretty well. Time to get the crank and pistons out. I also bought a cheapie spring compressor for the valve springs. I might work on that tonight too. I doubt I'll get very much done on this tomorrow. Who's idea was it to go do stuff on vacation anyway?

Edit-I also discovered that the hose for the brake vacuum boost was clogged by who knows what. You can blow through it one way, but not the other.

if it's the hose I'm thinking of, there's an internal check valve, so it's supposed to be like that.

I *think* the oil cooler nut is 27mm but it's been a bit since I removed one.

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to replace it.
The thing is all apart and sitting on the garage floor. I didn't take the oil squirters out, and I don't have a 27 mm socket. The rest is done.
Just deciding whether to disassemble the head tonight too so I can take them both to the shop at the same time.

The oil check sleeve is part of the oil pump. Problem solved
I used my 32mm to get that nut off. It was way too big but I can kind of tell the difference between a socket slipping off and a nut coming loose. We're all good now.

It's almost time to start shopping
