yet another question about HP gains.

95 Protege DX. I lurk and read a lot of archived posts. Just had a couple of questions. I have the tried and true Z5. But all options considered, a motor swap in the near future would probably be the most beneficial. So of course we look to the BP, for its relative ease of a swap... But the only thing I'm confused of is what cars can I go snatch the engine from... And by that I mean, the BP of a Protege is basically a detuned less agressive BP (based off my reading.)

So what BP would work with a protege that has the VICS and the oil squirters and the proper crankshaft and the proper oil feed tube etc?

Obviously not the Miata bp but in theory a Kia BP would work right? Or maybe a 94 protege with a BP?

Also I know a Toyota transmission conversion has been discussed but nothing I have found through digging has turned up a Toyota Motor swap or any other interesting options.

    Appreciate your time!

Regarding the toyota engine/trans... you can put in any engine and any transmission you want from any car in the world with enough time and money

As far as your 95 a BP swap makes the most sense. A KL V6 swap might also be possible.

I don't think they ever really made a "detuned" BP, just some negligible differences due to emissions control systems and tuning.

Yeah, I was just reading that some ES's came with a 1.8 SOHC version, and that some ES's came without the Variable Valve Timing... so yeah. Confused me.

Going to look more into the KL v6 swap. I have heard that it's possible before, just couldn't find much on the way of people actually doing it lol.

There was no VVT on the BP until the 2001 miata, the BG protege DX came with the 1.8 SOHC (B8)

The v6 engine & transmission should fit in your engine bay no problem, you'll probably need MX3 V6 axles. There should be some combination of stock mounts which will allow it all to bolt up. Wiring could potentially be a bit of a mess but since your car is a 95 you should still be OBD1... should be doable.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me. Wikipedia has its drawbacks.

I like this plan more and more. Seems like a lot of punch for the money. My car is OBD-i , was made before the obd-ii jump, which has its pros and cons.

Definitely should be able to clear the engine bay. I could source the V6 and tranny out of a mx3 if I could find one. -.-

The v6 in the mx3 is only a 1.8 liter, but if you can find a parts car you should be able to use everything but the engine itself (transmission, axles, possibly mounts, etc.) The 2.5 liter version of that engine was found in the mx6, 626, and probe. Probetalk is a popular forum where you can probably find out more detailed info specific to the KL motors.

Naturally aspirated I read on the forums a sohc crank w a bp block, miata 1.8 if I recall 95 to 97 is 10:1.

A miata sohc crank as it will be newer.
