WIP - 97 Probe GT KLDE into a 99-03 Protege - Watch me suffer!

    To begin, plan is to.

Phase 1. Remove all needed KLDE swap parts needed to put in a Protégé
Phase 2. Clean/redo all parts as needed (paint, clean, etc)
Phase 3. Sell as much as possible from the shell to fund the build and locating of a Protégé (yes, that's right I don't have a car to put this in yet)
Phase 4. Maintenance on motor (timing belt, plugs, wires, etc.....)
    Phase 5. Install

I plan for the car to be a quicker than normal Protégé, with a pretty cool little swap.

This is the car in question all the parts are coming from.

Car has rust in both rocker panels, my father says it could be fixed.....but the idea of a V6 in a four door Protégé is really appealing to me. I have a mechanically sound machine here. Engine runs, but makes a ticking noise....which I have looked into and found out is a timing belt tensioner. So ordered up a kit. With the engine coming out, I can do it there and make it a whole lot easier....plus clean it up some. Maybe paint it up and make it look good. Im not going for a Honda-Tech build here with Rywire this and Mugen that. Lol.

    Some pics.

    The car......

    Low miles.....I reckon.

Looks good till you pull the rocker trim off.......

Ill take some engine pics specifically today and update.

EDIT: This works out actually. Because I bought a timing belt kit, and a OBX UDP for the engine. So Im not losing out of any investment there. I did buy a fuel filter for a probe along with new plugs, probably wont work....the filter I mean. Scored some new(ish) NGK wires too.

Anyone know if I need the "burp" tank too?

    Part 2

    Update.

At lunch, went home and pulled airbox. Disconnected most of the harness on the drivers side. Disconnected starter, pulled radiator and brought here to the shop to drain it and clean it off.

Off topic....picked up a rare game I have been looking for.......this is multiplayer! Get some pizza rolls, and some dew.....charge up the Vape......mmmmm good times. So good my 5 year old loves it!

    Pix for views.....

Got this out as an assembly.........pretty stoked. Scuse the grass.....NC winter here is off.....grass growing in friggin January. I may have to mow....literally

    Part 3

Cleaned up the radiator/fan assembly. Put it in storage for a while. On to some other bits to pull. I will see what I can get out at lunch today.

Also, new parts......expecting the timing belt kit any day now.

    Pix:

    OBX UDP

Sorry for the crap pics. Took in a hurry....

    Part 4

Mostly out now. Although I am sure I am doing it wrong. I mean half the harness I'm pulling is probe specific crap. Anyone got a link or info on what can be paired down or rather a dead minimum ?

    Part 5

    I am doing it right....now

Pulled the engine harness. Its going to be gone through and made purty.

    So far pulled:

    Engine harness
    VAM
    ECM
Radiator assembly (hoses, fans, rad, wiring)

Next on the list, shift linkages.

Pics of the results, also a pic of the box of goodies (NGK wires, Denso plugs, and a fuel filter)

Almost there....not really. Ford decided to bolt the harness to the firewall for some reason, and all the wires caught on SOMETHING pulling it out. Had to jack the car up and get under to release them and help along.

Voila! Plugged in the VAM and ECM for a group photo. Happy family! I will clean up the loom some and show pics of that.

Wanted NGK plugs, but they only had Denso.....fuel filter is Probe specific, so I probably cant use it and I lost my receipt.

    Part 6

Anyone ever wonder what a KLDE timing belt kit looks like from ebay.....................wonder no more! Pretty nice quality Metal pulleys, solid parts....pretty happy

    Part 7

Pulled the shift linkages out.......good shape. Gonna hit em up with some paint after I clean them up some. Perhaps new bushings?

Sort of a paired down thread over a couple weeks. Been updating pretty regular now.

I'd probably not go ebay parts on a transverse V6 in a small bay but that's me.

You can just fab a bracket for the bigger fuel filter, or attache it to the old bracket with a sizable wormgear hose clamp.

I'd also like to point out how ford had just the worst radiator/coolant system designs in the 90s, 3 outlets is silly.

There are only like three states in the Union you can legally put an older engine in an OBD2 car and daily it.
Buy yeah NC is to blame.

Perfect application of sarcasm. I think so. The swap isn't beyond my capacity and reach its just now I'm having to replan the whole thing because. Well the 97 Klde isn't a try obd2 car. And doesn't interface with the dlc. So yeah given a less strict state it would be a non issue as it has to read from the dlc and communicate to the state machine. I am a service manager at a local GMC Buick dealer so I'm familiar with the law. I had planned for a 96 or 97 so that whole engine year thing would have been a mute point. Not going klg4 too much when the Klde I have is perfect. Idk

Well I'm glad I checked in on this thread before wasting my time writing a helpful response to your PM

                1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
                1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Well given that I do t k so what to say. Since then I've located the needed mx3 crossmember so I may still do this but probably in a escort or tracer. Maybe a wagon.

I suppose that was prudent. I am going on with it though just probably in an escort. Reply if you like I understand. I'm proceeding at a cautious rate.

A little bit of an explanation/apology.

At the point in time of posting I had and still do have a lot of issues I am dealing with. The last thing I wanted to do was have to source obscure parts to make something happen. Turns out not so obscure and easier than I thought to get. So, I have the crossemember on the way, axles and control arms are easier to source than that. So, at this point I am still going on with the project. It was too much to handle at that time and it was a frustrating moment where I threw my hands up in the air and said.....f it.

Cooler heads have prevailed. So, sorry for the quick post...then the whole scrapping idea. It will continue on but more than likely in a ODB 1 Ford Escort/Mercury Tracer......stay tuned!
