The last part of this process has been all about the tuning. Per Carlos's guidance, I was instructed to use an OBD2 cable which he sent me to hook up to my laptop. Then to download ECU flash, as well as teamviewer. Then last night, he sent me two more files which he used in the ECU flash program. It took nearly two hours of driving and reciting AFR numbers. I'd drive it and tell him via text where the issues were, then I would return to the garage where he would update the maps. At one point, the timing was called into question so I took a pick of the CAS and sent it to him. I was way off. I got that adjusted and the rest started happening. The car runs better now than it ever has. Better power than ever, and better torque at lower RPM's. My tach still doesn't work but that is only a matter of time. Carlos knows what to do and is willing to help with the problem. Awesome service.

I'm going to hang onto the cable for a few days to make sure everything is still going good before I send it back. They're expensive and I was glad to not have to buy one. Thanks again for that.

Over all, this has been a fun satisfying experience. I'll admit though, even though it's paint by numbers, the chance for an unknown is there. The upgrade is solid if the platform is solid.

Thanks Carlos. Props for a great upgrade.

Apparently cold starts are a problem. Haven't problems solved yet so don't know where it will take me.

Are you running e85 or 93 octane fuel?

              91 octane I believe.
I'm going to use Evoscan so Carlos can get a better tune on the thing. I'm pretty excited about it. I just have to find the time.

I would use 93 octane if I thought it would change anything.

93 more det resistant and more timing. Does Carlos say otherwise?

I just asked him. He said 93 always.

This is one solution to the tach problem

This is the one he recommended.

I suppose I'm the only person that had an anxiety attack for you using a red wire as a ground.

Couldn't you cobble together a working tach from Miata parts and guides? IIRC they have problems getting tach when going off standard EMS and fix it with a resistor.

On octane levels, I have noticed issues when filling up at 10% Ethanol stations. I would recommend filling up at stations that do not use Ethanol before paying for top tier gasoline.

I have a list somewhere but you can google it.

Regapped the plugs to .024~ and continued to tune. As it turns out, tuning this car isn't so easy. I'm looking for a long term solution.

Can use openflash. I paid the $25 for evoscan but haven't found a reason to use it yet. Don't know how to use them anyway.
This isn't the cheapest cable I've found. http://www.evoscan.com/evoscan-gps-o...flashing-cable
                        Turns out they're expensive.

On your tach issue, do you have the JDM cluster with the GTX motor swap? I'm sure it's no different but that speed sensor cable might be unhappy. Also if it's stock I'd replace it anyway, those things only last ~150K from my experience with various late 90's jap cars.

If you reallllyyyy want to dirtbag it, the miata guys pull the cable out of the rubber sleeve and regrease it. Then you can see if it's failed.
Usually the tach is only degraded (I.E. wobbling) and still operational when a cable is bad.

You also might have yanked on the cable too hard and pulled it out on the cluster side/tranny side.

It's USDM cluster with JDM engine.
I haven't spent much time researching the tach issue but am happy to have some leads. Thanks.

im really dissapointed we need an external driver to get our tach working. i hope there is an easier alternative

When looking at my schematic, it seems the tach runs off the igniter. There's a couple of up arrow looking things on the trace which must be the resister Kitty is be talking about.

"A car igniter is a component in the car's engine that is responsible for sending a signal from within the distributor to the ignition coil, making the spark plugs fire. It is also known as the ignition control module."

Carlos said something about waste spark which kind of confuses me.
