    Going lean in boost

I was having problems a while back with my daily driver cutting out in boost conditions. I decided it was too lean and gave the VAF a click. Now, I have good response in boost, but get horrible gas millage. 24 on the highway. It also stinks when sitting at a stop light.

On a side note, I caught the smell of gas coming from under the hood a few weeks ago so popped the hood to investigate. It turned out there was some fuel on top of the engine in the fuel rail area. That's never happened before or since.

I think I'll replace the fuel hoses again and lean the VAF a click. That should help my tuning and my gas millage. I hope anyway.

Yikes, fuel on the engine is just a little bit of bad luck away from an engine fire....

I recommend replacing the fuel injector o-rings as well, unless you're certain they aren't leaking.

If I'm taking the rail out, I just as well replace the injectors with some spares I have. I bought the rebuild kits ages ago.

Lean as in cutting out at high boost, backfiring. I think that's what that means. It's timed pretty fast too.

not to be a dick, but maybe diagnose the problem before throwing parts at it?

cutting out at high boost and backfiring can be a number of things that aren't necessarily running lean. spark blowout comes to mind. what are your AFRs when it's doing this?

              No worries atomic.
I thought I had diagnosed it, as best as I could without an AFR gauge. No, I still don't have a gauge. Guilty as charged. There may be one in my near future though. I'm trying to get the B4Pro running so I can get the daily back in the garage for some tuning time. It's quick as hell but, it's got some problems that need attention.

The gas I found, the rich stench of exhaust at stop lights, the poor gas millage, and the back fire through the intake are what convinced me. It certainly wouldn't be the first time I was wrong though.

From that last description it sounds more like your running rich. Too much fuel. Check your plugs recently? Black and soaked could mean too rich and not igniting/burning the fuel so it's pissing all over. Make sure they are gapped right too. Too wide could cause blow outs/backfiring.

Obviously safety first, make sure there's no fuel leaks. While you're at it try to make sure there are no boost or vac leaks. Hope some of this helps.
