It's been a rough week, our roof failed and a replacement is going to cost somewhere north of $12000 (one estimate was $40K) and I have no way to pay for it, so everything must go. The wife's mustang was the first one to go. The Protege is up next. It's a 1990 4wd/5-speed car. I planned to do a GTR conversion. The engine and trans are long gone. The entire front suspension is out of it. All of the suspension parts have been cleaned and powder coated (will need bushings and bearings). The P/S rack is junk. I started to do a manual rack conversion and the manual rack will come with it. I'm asking $800 and I'll need to get the body dollies back (they are not mine).

I have a good title; I have the original PS rack, and will come with a manual DX rack. I also have a PS rack rebuild kit (new seals); but I scored the inner bore of the rack trying to pull a bushing and two the the steering shaft bearings felt "rough". I purchased 1 new bearing but it is 7 mm "tall" and the originals are 6 mm (I could not find a source for the 6mm). When I thought I only had 1 bad bearing, I figured I little machine shop work would make it work, but having to trim 2 mm out was farther than I wanted to go. So abandoned the PS rack and started on the conversion to manual. As part of that conversion I cut the original PS rack mounts to fit the smaller diameter of the manual rack. You would either need to finish the manual conversion or find another 4x4 P/S rack (I suppose you could re-cut the mounts and weld back in the metal that was removed, but that seems harder than just finishing the manual conversion)

32-147a, there's one bearing above the part that engages the rack and one below. It's not in my picture but still in the rack housing when this picture was taken. The work was done back in 09, so I don't remember the details, but I had to go to a specialty bearing store in Madison. I could get the correct inner and outer diameter, but not the right thickness.

I don't think so; the 4WD and FWD racks are different. The FWD racks mount to the sub frame and the mounting "tabs" are flat. The 4WD rack mounts to the firewall and has a 45 degree "ramp". Also, the mount points are closer together on the 4wd, it was easy move the bushing on the manual rack, probably impossible on the PS rack. The easy way out is to finish my manual rack conversion. The hang up is the space between the manual rack, the rubber bushings and the fire wall. You could just bolt it up and go, but I'm worried that the rack will have too much play. I think the car would have a tendency to wander.

Comparing PS & manual racks, same length and where it connects to the steering column match up. Note: the right mount on the P/S rack is not in the correct spot.
Here's the stock manual rack connected to the 4x4 firewall. The right mount is just a rubber bushing on the rack body, I was make to juts slide it over to get it to line up. It will likely need a longer boot on that side, but I haven't got that far yet.

Price drop to $400; but I'm going to keep the manual rack and swap out some of the dash trim pieces and gauge cluster with the 323. You'll get the old pieces and P/S rack from the 323, but trim is not as nice as the pieces currently on the car. I'm not going to list the car anywhere else ( I DO NOT want to deal with every craiglist idiot asking if the car runs and will I take $6 for it). So, if I don't get any interest at this new price; I'll just tell the wife I tried and go back to the previous plan of slowly ignoring/planing to fix it.
