    JDM Mazda Familia Interplay Build.

    Well hello there everyone. Ive decided to post up a build/restore thread on my Mazda Familia. I was inspired by a fellow Interplay addict and new friend Scrummatron, with his build thread of his two little JDM gems.

    Nearly a year ago I managed to bag myself a 1992 Mazda Familia Interplay Saloon. Ive always had a thing for this particular model since I first saw one in my early teens, parked up outside the local honda dealers in my home town.

    I was never one for four door saloons, as I always had a thing for my hot hatches. From my old eg6 sir to my mk2 suzuki swift gti. But for some reason ive had a soft spot for these Mazdas.

    I saw a couple of hatch backs come up for sale over the years, one of which I went to view. This was when I learned of just how bad these can suffer from the dreaded tin worm. I held off in hopes that I would eventually find exactly what I was looking for, and I was very glad that I did.

    The car then sat outside my house for the best part of a year. Not having anywhere to work on it was a big problem, seeing as I had a very small garden and it is a very enclosed housing estate. I even put the car through the NCT (National car test for road worthiness) and it failed on a cracked license plate and two perished brake hoses. Very good for a car that has supposedly been sat for the best part of 7 years.

    After chatting with another guy from here (Scrummatron) and seeing the work he has put into his so far, I gave myself a kick in the backside and set out to find a garage to rent.

    I found the perfect little garage only about 45 mins from where I live, well secured, cctv, the works. And got it for a bargain.

    So after getting settled in and gathering whatever tools I had at home, I got to work stripping the car down. There was some leaks to be sorted along with a wiring issue I am trying to get my head around. Understanding that these cars are prone to rust and given how bad the water leaks were, I decided to pull the interior out and go through it with a fine tooth comb.

    I was very pleased to find little to no rust under the carpet/behind kick panels/under the dash. Just two small spots of rust inside the car, and where I had expected them to be (below the two leaks). Also, upon removing the carpet I found this little coin. Click image for larger version

    Dont know whether or not its japanese currency, but its all in japanese. Will serve a nice keyring for the Mazdas keys.

      Another issue that will need sorting is the headliner. Ive been told they are a demon for sagging, and mines the saggiest. I set out removing the headliner, but as I went at it, I noticed someone has had a go at it already. They had damaged all along under the windscreen and along the drivers door. So I will either need to replace it, or see if maybe I could place new fabric over the old fabric, seeing as its the old fabric that seems to be keeping the damaged parts together.

        The competition emerges!
        Good stuff sham,nice to see her progressing,...and the front is growing on me!!
        Those saggy headliners are a continuous nightmare,..all I can say on that bit is "good luck",..
        Also jealous of the lack of rust,..7 years on a driveway versus 1.5 in a garden,...you got lucky

          Haha I had to get her up here. She's been lurking in the background for too long. ��

          I have to say I prefer the square headlights, might end up buying a saloon front, be nice to have.

          I got lucky on the rust side of things, although I am jealous of the colour of your mz1. Haha and some of the little tasty extras.

          I'm gonna have a go at the headliner myself, I'm sure I can do something with it.

            Making slow progress. Have her up in the air now and ready for the rear axle/tank/brake and fuel lines all to be removed. Then to clean off factory underseal, and re seal it all with fresh underbody paint.

            The bodywork underneath rust wise is not all that bad. Even in behind the back bumper is just surface rust, and will clean right off.
            Sorry about bad quality pictures, realised after that the lens on my camera is cracked.

              Yesterday was my first chance to get back down to do some work on her in two weeks. My attention had been drawn away by another little dinger of a car I picked up.

              1990 Toyota Corolla, one owner from new, 42K miles, garaged for the last 11 years. And it was handed to me, free of charge.

              Wont get much done next weekend either, as Ill be doing some work on a mates build instead.

              Small bit more progress in prepping the underbody for undersealing. Rear axle removed, most of the fuel/brake lines removed. Also removed the exhaust, and only with one bolt snapping.

              Rust underneath not bad at all, just surface rust really. Nothing that wont come off with a good cleaning. Exhaust will have to be replaced, as the old one has been butchered by whoever put it on. The whole exhaust came off in one section from the manifold back, someone had welded all the flanges together, and badly at that. I will be replacing the exhaust anyways as I would like a shiny stainless steel system.
