how do I change the gear oil on a 1993 protege?
My car is acting wonky and I am pretty sure that is the problem? And can someone send detailed pictures from different angles? I would really appreciate it. I've never changed it since I bought it five years ago. It's a manual transmission and there is no dipstick for the gear oil.

    acting wonky how?

there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission, take that out. normally you add new fluid from the VSS hole, but the speed sensor likes to weld itself to the case, so I usually just take out the plug on the front of the transmission and use a hand pump to fill it.

I'm fairly certain that all of the first generation transmissions (94 and older Protege, 96 and older escort) do not have that fill plug on the front. My 91, 93, 95 escort GT's didnt have it, nor did the 93 protege trans that i had as a spare at one point.

Basically, check and make sure you can get the VSS out before you drain the transmission.

As far as what fluid to replace it with, make sure it's either a fairly light GL4 rated gear oil or Mercon ATF.

oh yeah, I never put ATF in any of the 2Gs I had so I was going based off of the ZX2.

**** it, use the hole for the reverse switch.

also use the cheapest Mercon ATF you can find: if it's good enough for my wagon, it's good enough for a stock Protege...

I've also had good luck with cheap wal mart brand mercon in my daily driver escort wagon. I was having all sorts of funky transmission problems a few months after i got it... tough to get into gear, would get stuck in 5th gear, etc. Changed the oil and it was all better.

The hole for the reverse switch might work in a pinch, can't remember if that's higher or lower than the actual fill level though... lower i'd imagine.

My reply was a bit brief ... I replaced crappy old mystery fluid with fresh wal mart fluid and all my shifting probs went away.
