    Twm Short shifter kit

    undefined

I have a short shifter kit installe don my car, I've had it for a around a lil over a year and it's still pretty rough. Someone was telling me that I can oil it down, butr exactly how would I go about doing this? just to make it shift a lil smoother. The shift throw is incredibly short which I like it's just a lil rough going from 1st to 2nd. What can I do?

You might try switching to a synthetic transmission oil such as Red line MT-90. I found that this smoothed out my shifts somewhat. Also, make sure that your shift lever pivot is well-greased. Finally, check to see that the bolt that connects your shift lever to the change control rod is at the right torque setting: 12-16 ft/lbs (16-22 N/m). If this bolt is to tight, it will take more force to move the shift lever.

Ok thanks man. Could I do this on my own, I'm not too familiar with the shifter so I don't think I'd like to mess around with it, unless you think it's something pretty easy and can be done at home. Or should I just take it to a shop?

        yardy pr5,

If you do a search you can find instructions for installing short shifters. These will tell you how to remove the shift lever so that you can re-grease it and then how to re-install it. If you look at the instructions, you can determine if you think you can do the job yourself.

Re-torqueing the shift lever bolt and changing the transmission oil is a job that you could probably do yourself. Drive the front of your car up on ramps or place it on jackstands, go under the car and find and loosen the bolt that connects the shift lever to the change control rod. Then, using a torque wrench, re-tighten the bolt to the correct setting.

Since the car is already on ramps or stands, you are all set to change the transmission oil. The drain and fill plugs both take a 23 mm socket. The drain plug is underneath the trans and the fill plug is at the front of the trans pointing slightly down. Remove both plugs and let the oil drain (it's better if you do this after a run so that the oil is hot and will more completely drain). Reinstall the drain plug and refill the trans with 2.83 US quarts (2.68 liters) of SAE 75W-90 synthetic gear oil. As stated, I use Red Line MT-90 but of course the choice is up to you.

I found the easiest method was to remove the air intake snorkel over the radiator for better visibility and to use a funnel with a long tube placed in the fill hole. Tighten both plugs to 29-43 ft/lbs (40-58 N/m) and be sure to use new sealing washers on both (Mazda part no. 9956-41-800).

        Good luck!
