    GI: My 'built' Kia transmission

If you have followed my posts, you know how much work I have put into strengthening this transmission.

    Start with a Kia transmission.

    1.) 5th gear 'plate mod'.

2.) Reinforced bellhousing to prevent the secondary inner bearing from punching through like on my previous Mazda g-series.

3.) Different secondary inner bearing. Hard to see, but the outer race is flanged for more support. Drawback is that it's really hard to find. Also, added a weld bead for more strength in that area.

4.) Quaife helical LSD. I don't have an individual picture of it, but you can see it in the shots below. I bought it from Jeff (trailrider098).

5.) PAR billet straight-cut 3rd and 4th gears. These are the ones with the double syncro and needle-bearing option (requires the shaft to be machined).

6.) Remaining gears and shafts were heat-treated by RacerStev and then shot-peened.

7.) Box was completely rebuilt with all new bearings that have been keyed to prevent them from spinning in the case. Roughly 2000 miles on it using Torco synthetic fluid.

8.) 3.85 final drive ratio and the longer 5th gear for lower cruising rpm.

9.) Drilled and tapped for oil cooler/pump. The drain plug has been enlarged to 1/2" npt so fittings are easy to find. Also, has a tapped hole on the top for the return and another tapped hole on the side where I used a temp probe. All of these are easily plugged with npt plugs.

I think that's all the mods. Obviously, I also have the intermediate shaft and axles. Open to offers - keep in mind that the PAR gears alone cost ~$2000 and the Quaife over $1000. Add to that all the machining and labor and please come up with a fair price.

Reason for selling is to convert over to a Toyota transmission like Jon has done.

I am hoping for atleast $2500. That would be a great deal for someone who is wanting to upgrade to the PAR billet 3rd and 4th gears. You would basically get the gears, a super deal on a Quaife LSD, and all the strengthening/rebuilding work done for free.

I might be interested in this. What timeframe for selling it Ferdi? Also, do you believe the toyota box to be stronger? BTW, are the par gears quite loud?

I have no problem with that as I guess a lot of people have MFactory LSDs now. I'll take $2000 for the box without the Quaife. That's less than what it costs to install the PAR gears! It cost me a couple hundred just to get the shafts ground for the needle bearings.

As soon as possible. I am converting my car to more of a track car as I don't even drive it much now as it is. I am going to start pulling out the motor/transmission in a few days. Going to fix a tiny oil pan leak while I am there, and remove the ac/ps (after all the work I did to make it work...).

The straight-cut gears are not as loud as going fast in reverse. I can just hear it over my 3" exhaust.

From what Jon has been telling me, the Toyota box should be stronger.

the toyota trans is a beast

This was my very first run down the track on the new GT42r setup in the Celica. I ran a 10.94 @ 136.84 mph.The second run I blew an intercooler pipe off and ...

those alltracs are pigs too, 3300 pounds curb weight. i think we would be hard pressed to EVER break this gearbox in a fwd 2500 pound car.

And if ever you miraculously did bust the tranny, Fensport makes a full straight cut dog box setup for the tranny. They even have stronger shifter forks available. To my knowledge, the forks are the only weakpoint on these trannys. (If you consider breaking them at over 500 whp "weak"...)

Oh and Ferdi, I'm interested in this tranny... I will be PM-ing you.

breaking a shift fork is rarely the transmissions fault... generally it's "driver error", trying to force it into gear. doesnt even have much to do with power level.

At this point the transmission is pretty much sold.

Will have the Quaife for sale shortly though.
