how much hp can the stock b6t handle?

hey i have a b6t out of a 1988 mazda 323 gt, that motor has been taken out and is going in to my festiva... its got a copple mods done to it but im wondering how much the stock rods, pistons, crank and block can take??? the crank is a small nose one if that makes any difference... also i have a SOHC N/A b6 out of a 92 323, that crank looks like a big nose crank, is that any better than the one in the b6t? im thinking its not but i thought i would ask...

big nose is better. You can get huge power out of a b6t if you spend huge money. Stock internals, different tuyrbo, prolly 240 at the crank and expect it to last a while.
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

as long as all the mazdas got the real b6t rods and not the skimpy ones like merc/ford did you should be good like he says... ive just never looked into if only our 4wd got them rods or not, i know other countries got the better parts...

All of the B6T's that hit these shores from 88-89 either GT or GTX have the bigger rods. The Capris got the superceded Miata rods. I have had my hands in all of these motors and that is what I found.

so what you are saying is i can bring the stock pistons, rods and crank up to 240 ish hp?.... thats great :D i have a guy willing to sell me a set of used wiesco pistons... how much are the stock rods good too? im gonna get a set of "m-tuned" rods.... then i want to make 300+ hp if the trans will hold... my only worry is the crank and block, what are they good to?

is there any way to make sure i have the "good" rods in my motor? like checking the numbers on them or something like that?

also i have heard of a mx-3 head swap... any links to that i have looked long and hard with no luck will the mx-3 intake manifold fit on the b6t head?

The GTX/GT rods have the wide gusset on the bottom.

I'd be kinda leery about used pistons, get em checked carefully first, by a tech with a mic. Don't worry about the crank and block. The trans will fail first.

stock stick festy tranny isn't gonna like much more than 130 hp... auto might let you go to about 170 or so. i know alot of the festy guys on fordfestiva.com swap in the escort gt tranny which will last you far into the 200-300 hp range, it should bolt right up to the b6t seeing as the BP is just an elongated version of the b3/b6 block.

i would put more money into a proper fuel system and not worry so much about the engine internals.. on my old festiva b6t/g5mr setup the internals were stock (gtx big rod) and i ran 20 psi on an air research t3/t04b 50 trim on pump gas and it lasted a long time. you should be fine for about 250+ whp.. 300 is a little high but i still think it would handle it with proper tuning, maybe not very long but i believe it will handle it.

there was a guy on mazda323performance who had a bf gtx with stock block running a disco potato with the wastgate welded shut ( not recommended! lol ) hitting like 25 psi with race gas.. if i remember correctly he dyno'd like 280 whp? he did have arp head studs though i think..

anyway i would run the stock engine. then after she blows, build it!
festiva #1 stock daily 63 whp FTW

festiva #2 bp+t, sink trap style turbo setup, g series trans, thunderturd 60 trim, 550cc's, s-afc, rx7 vaf, 38mm external wastegate, fmic, etc.... let me know how the taillights look

about the escort gt tranny the g series one with the b6t wont be compatable since the b6t g series trans is clutch cable driven, which is also adjustable, where the egt g series trans is hudraulically driven with a clutch line with a clutch master cylinder located on the right hand side of your firewall, to the bottom right of the brake master cylinder, i did this exact conversion to my 1989 323 gt bp engine and trans set up as we speak , also u need to reuse the stock b6t trans mount and plate if not, it wont sit proprely and the alignment will be off the shifter rod linkage, this was just mentioned for those who arent aware of all the interchangeability issues regarding bf to bg chassis trany info, i am quite aware that many poeple on here already know this , but i just thought that it would simplify the swap for any newcomer regarding this subject.

I've read that the Miata con-rods supersede the GTX ones. Does that mean that they just stopped making the GTX ones, or does it actually mean that the Miata ones are stronger?

I've read the GTX rods are 580g and the Miata ones are 540g...

                            b6t

well from personnal experience, the b6t engine only had one major issue when it comes to reliability, and that is the small nose crank which over time is trully visible, all u gotta do is take a look and the crankshaft pully and when u see a little side to side wobble on it, u know that its not a good thing, i remember disconnecting the fuel cut off, cutom 2 and half echaust with no cat and a hks filter the car would stock turbo and all, i would hit a minimum of 13 psi on the boost gage and see about 15psi when it started to get a bit colder outside, obviously always running 94 octane fuel, i drove this way for about 50 000 km before i noticed a bit of play on my crankshaft pulley , a master tech at a local mazda dealer told me that there a quick fix for this problem that if caught at an early stage could prevent further damage to the crank: - remove the centre crank bolt and 4 little bolts, install a revised one with some lock tight slap it back with the proper torque specs and the problem never got any worse till i sold the car to a friend who drove it for another 30-40 000 kms and only changed 2 cam seals, the car was putting down an healthy 170-180 ish hp no doubt , also lets not forget that the b6t s 7.9-1 compression ratio is very boost friendly, everything in that motor is bullet proof, the worst thing that ever happened to the car was some misfiring issues, i opened the hood and looked at my dizzy and it looked like it was a bout to split in half, so i replaced it and that was it

the b6t is by far , in its stock form an amazing hight performance turbocharged marvel of engineering, this coming from a guy whos owned 4 323 gt sedans and 2 gtx ' s , it can pretty much handle 200-250 hp with the proper mods and a healthy crank, no doubt
