Just went from auto to manual and SOHC to DOHC ... need my help?

Hey guys, I just went through a nice swap. I bought a clean '92 LX with a blown SOHC/Auto drivetrain (I'm in Canada) and swapped a manual tranny with an Escort GT BP.

I thought maybe I could help some of you in their swaps... always good to know someone who's done it before.

By the way, the BP is a nice engine. Had the SOHC before in my '91 and what a difference! Can't get enough of the high revs!

I did not have the BP's wiring harness. Only the BP and the BP specific ECU (BP09). So I used the SOHC's wiring and added the 2 wires for the VICS.

But if you can, use the wiring from the escort since it is made for the BP.

      Hope this helps!

        Couple of Q's:

1- How did you wire the interlock switch, did you wire it to the clutch switch?
2- How did you wire the reverse lights and neutral switch?

1-Interlock switch? You mean the pin that locks the key in? I put a tie wrap on it

2-Still have to figure that one out but I think the correct wires are on the auto tranny plug, the just need to be routed to the 2 correct wires on the manual tranny.

I have an auto harness on my manual and also have no problems....IT's a auto motor too so I didnt run into any throttle body problems

thats good. i figured the neutral safety switch or something would be different. so your fuel rail wasnt different?

Fuel rail IS different indeed... I removed (cut) the Ford style plastic fuel line leaving only the metal barbed 'fitting'. Put your Mazda rubber fuel line on it with a good collet.

For the fuel line going from the pressure regulator to the return line on the firewall next to the fuel filter, remove the Ford plastic line, go buy EXACTLY 3 feet of 50 psi rubber fuel hose and plug in the regulator, than in the return line on the firewall. Again, use good collets.

No need to buy the mazda rail... and the SOHC rail won't work unfortunatly.

                        Hope this helps!

                            out of curiousity
what about the clutch pedal and shifter?
are there bolt-in spots for everything?
would i need a new center console?

once i get better at driving a 5spd, i'm going to swap auto to manual
(probably end of summer... don't know, when i'm done with the fixing\repaint i'll start looking for deals)

You'll have to put a manual switch for the cooling fan cause the wiring to the fan for an auto is totally different than with the manual. There are 3 relays on the auto and only 1 for the manual so I just wired in a manual switch in the dash. I could probably make it work but I don't have so many hours to find the good wiring.

You'll have to add a clutch switch from a manual car if you don't want to be able to start in gear.

You need the brake booster from a manual car since the auto one doesn't have the hydraulic clutch line.

You need the pedals and clutch cable from a manual car.

Having a wrecked manual car and swap the parts is what would be the wise thing to do.
