    Dashboard & Steering Column removal

Forgive my redundancy, but I have more questions on removing the dashboard. Since the update/crash of the old sight, I can't find any topics on BG dash removals anymore. So....

    1) How many bolts are there? I know of the three along the windshield, 2 on either sides in the door well, but is there another. Thats a total of seven Are there more bolts?? I will be installing A/C soon.

    2) Steering Column removal: I can get all thesurrounding trim off, but how can I get the column out? I will soon be swapping a tilt column from an LX.

    All freeback is much appreciated.

(L&R) 3 on the side: remove side panel you will see 2 10mm bolts the third 10mm is on the bottom of the dash where the lower panel attaches at the bottom.

Remove Defroster panel (the panel that the VIN is attached to) there is a screw in the center that has to be removed first (it is under a pop off cover) After you get that screw out pry off the panel. Once the panel is off you will see 3 more 10mm bolts 1 on each end and 1 in the middle.

Next remove the lower center console trim you will find 4 10 mm bolts 2 on each side.
That is all that is holding the dash in. But becarful when moving the dash forward as there are some wires the have to be disconnected before you remove the dash.

    As for the steering column:
On the bottom of the column there is 4 12mm bolts You will see them near the key cylinder.

There are 2 10mm nuts at the base of the column just before the universal joint.

On the universal joint there is a 12mm bolt that clamps the joint to the column remove that and give the column a quick pull it should pop right out. Just make sure you disconnect all the wiring before pulling out the column.

Thats it. Assembly is reverse of disassembly.

Well, I wanna thank the forum for all your help! I've been a stickler about this, but it was purewhitemp5 that made it easy to understand! After destroying one poor lil 323, I accidentally broke off an essential part of the dash. So, I took a breather and attacked a grey dx. After a total of 3 hours of wrenching (no, I wasn't following purewhitemp5's directions at first) I got it! Yes, my fellow collegues, you may think I am nuts, but I can gurantee you that my 323 will be the only 323 that is black in and out!

Well, I wanna contribute a little to the forum, so tomorrow I will formulate my how to for removing the dash. It takes a couple special tools and 4.5 hours of manual wrenching for a full removal and install. I'm totally beat!

I hope your talking about a different model cuz the Protege/MX-3 are a walk in the park. I cant see how much different the 323 hatch could be.

Actually, you need a 12mm for the steering column, a 19mm or 13/16 for the wheel, a flex head short socket 10mm for the bolts near the dash, neednose pliers for the heater control wires, a 17mm for the hood release bolt, and the proper extensions.

But it seems like all of this is common knowledge, so I'll erase the pics on my camera.

I suppose so. I am flexible and installing the power cord to the bezel is quite a task.

So many people have so many generic descriptions, but no one outlines the must need tools and appropriate order for bolt removal. Then again, I went the extra mile and completely switched the dash pads, This I have no one post anything about.

                          don't erase the pics, make a how-to.
                          How-TO's are encouraged.
