Does a 2000 Protege ZM neccesarily have an EGR valve?

I've seen ZM 99 to 2003 models at salvage yards with a pipe coming out of the exhaust manifoild to to the intake manifold.
However mine has no such pipe.

So I'm asking is it posible mine didn't come with an EGR valve?
