    Varify this LSD

    My work log

Can anyone identify this diff for me. It's supposed to be a viscous unit from a GTR but since I've never seen one before, I'm not sure I could identify one if I saw it. This looks to me like a regular open differential though. I can see gears inside which I didn't really expect to see. I guess it could be a torsen type but that just doesn't seem likely.

    Some help would be appreciated.

      Raer diff

Hi, this is rear diff, mechanical one (if inside are plates than it is LSD), viscous one is a kind of sealed torus. Looks like 323GTR which originally came with viscous but there was an option with mechanical LSD

from the photo, it might be a torsen. but definitely not a viscous type.

              100% not a torsen

IMO this either looks like an open or a viscous.

What gives me hope that this is an LSD is that the output shafts look alike, and the new one on the right is for an LSD.

Bit of a challenge getting the lighting right so it wasn't all washed. The focus isn't great but it's better than the alternative.

its a VLSD but you dont have the right axle stubs. one of them... cant remember which side... needs to have a short splined section at the tip thats smaller in diameter than the main splines. this rides in the corresponding smaller diameter splined section inside the diff that you can see in photo #2

this will help. the 90-93 miata VLSD is identical to the GTR unit you have. there are pics of the diff itself and the stubs so you can see wtf i'm talking about lol.

I was curious why both stubs looked alike when one was supposed to be very hard to find for some reason.

                      Thanks for the input.

That pretty much answers all my questions.

Do I need to adjust the lash and preload when I install these output shafts?

I would like to make sure it is in spec before I install this unit in the car but am finding information a bit hard to come by.

The shafts were rusty as hell so I had to clean them up a bit. They look to be in good shape though, apart from the bashed to hell studs on one of them. Great find though.
