i have to agree. they weigh probably twice the weight of the stock set up on a protege. the rotors weigh a ton! i have no doubt most would notice the drag in all truth.

So what are you saying? go with BA Astina or 626 5 lug and that's it? or stick with the 4 lug and just upgrade to better pads, rotors, lines and fluid?

I can lock up my wheels with what I have now(stock)...so if I upgrade to aftermarket stuff, I'd probably be golden. I'll just be limited in wheel choices...

I'll take a closer look at the brake system on my buddy's 626 parts cars has and decide from there...I'm a bit concerned on F/R brake proportioning...doing this could probably make the car more dangerous...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but BA Astina 5 lug would be the equivalent to the the 88-91 626, MX6...no?

Does your car have 4 wheel disc stock? The BG came with 9 1/4"" front disc / rear drum or optional 4 wheels discs. If you have 4 wheel disc and the front rotors are 10 1/4" I would get some good quality slotted rotors, pads, fluid and flex lines and call it a day. If you want 5 bolt by all means upgrade, just don't go to crazy with the rotor diameter. If you have the 9 1/4" front disc / rear drum set-up you can upgrade it with the bigger Protege, Escort Gt, or MX-3 V6 brakes. A lot of people use the stock proportioning valve with the brake upgrade successfully. I put an adjustable proportioning valve on my car. (all my brake lines were shot, so the timing was right) LOL. Not rocket science really, just go to a wide open space and make sure the car locks up its front brakes before its rear brakes and comes to a nice controlled stop. If it does not put a adjustable proportioning valve inline to the rear brakes and dial out the back brakes as needed to have the fronts lock up before the rears.

Yeah it's disc all around...with the bigger diameter discs...

I would seriously doubt Mazda would cast spindles and hubs for just one model car...there has to be an American equivalent...

Ryan regarding the dipstick and tube, I'll get my friend to come look at the engine and depending on how things turn out, I'll either ngotiate some trades with him or cannibalize it... If I tear it apart, I'll send that stuff to you for future considerations...
I'm beginning to think I bought that stuff for nothing...

its been done a few times. and was 1st done almost a decade ago so its def possible. it just involves cutting up the block, and welding cast iron. kind of a waste when pretty much every junkyard has a kia fe3 block that would be a much better start.

and the probe and mx6 use the exact same midshaft as the 626.

if you want increased displacement without effecting the rod ratio. thats the "proper" way to go about it.
Throwing a 2.2 crank into a FE3 block seems silly in retrospect.

tossing a 2.2 crank in the fe3 has Always seemed silly to me. since no ones ever maxed out the 2.0 version, there's really no need to improve upon it yet. keep it simple with what you know works is the way i look at it.

im a mod on PT actually. lol. have been for like 7 years. and yea, im on most every mazda forum.

the G5M was in the 88-92's also. in the 2.2 n/a. thats actually the trans you would want to use on a FE3 install if you didnt want to cut your frame rails. its also the same trans that would have came stock on the FE3 originally. minus maybe slightly different gearing depending.
