Next installment of the Gray 4WD.

Basically, the exhaust rusted out. the top of the resonator went first, so that got replaced by a straight pipe. Then the holes in the tailpipe were evident, then the flange rusted through.

Here are some pics of the tinworm, on just the S-bend that goes under the gas tank and over the rear crossmember:

Look what the heat shield was hiding!

it's even rusting along the seam of the pipe...

here's the FRONT side of the flange. the back side, connected to the muffler, just broke completely off, so there was no muffler in the system anymore. Also my favorite shot of the bunch, I really like the texture and different layers that show up.

also right along a seam, and covered by the heat shield:

Heres the new piece. close enough for government work, eh? Not fancy, just some scrap I had sitting from my dad's Intrique a couple years ago:

      and another view:

Sounds WAY better, smells better, and actually seems to have more nuts. probably because it's 2.25" now, instead of the just-under-2" that was the OEM exhaust for the SOHC B8. Since there's a BP in there, I think it breathes just a bit better.

Work looks good as always. What kind of blade are you using on your chop saw?

Those boots are just some Sorel winter boots I've had for years and years. Just put new liners in'em last year, now they're nice and toasty warm.

The blade is a 10" metal-cutting blade I got at Menards for like 5 bucks. I'ts been through a LOT of metal, it's nearing time to get a new one, as it's only about a 7-inch blade these days.

Whoah, I actually got out to the garage and WORKED on the Gray 4WD for a bit!! Finally got the 220V circuits run for the welder and the compressor, and got my black pipe for the air lines run.

This is the result of yesterday afternoon's couple of hours of "free time"

That grey car sure looks nice......Find myself every few months searching for its replacement.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

Well then. Seems like most of my photo links above are all broken, probably due to website upgrades.. (most of the pics are still there, just different path now..).

but, I've been working a bit towards getting this 4WD project back on the rails!!

So, to get this sucker on the path to high-falutin' power:
-Junked the chassis of my '95 Escort wagon, city didn't like me having a non-running car in my own driveway.
-Traded the '92 MX-3 GS for some overpriced tools (Snap-On, and actually very very useful tools, not just random sets..)
-Fixed the exhaust system on my Subaru OBS
-fixed the brakes and started DD'ing my '90 323
-put in a new clutch slave cylinder in my buddy's '96 Ranger
-swapped to a Ford 8.8 with 4.10/trac-lok in the same ranger.
-rebuilt the weber carb on my '86 86.

now that everything is mostly caught up, I can finally start chipping away at the Protege!!
                              This arrived yesterday!

The car is still on the same jackstands from several years ago. I've got an actual dashboard to install (keeps gauges out of the sun and visible on track, helps reduce glare). lots of stuff stored inside, under and around the car while it's been waiting, so there's at least a couple weekends of clean-up, and remembering where I had things stashed, and preparation.

I finally got my welding supplies (electrodes, filler, gloves, shorty cups) for my TIG welder, still need to get some gas though. Found out that Top Shelf over in Portage actually is a rep for the nearest welding supply shop, so I don't have to drive all the way to Madison for refills anymore. plus get to see some sweet cars when I get it!

Of course, there's the gaming weekends, and autoX weekends, and other Real Life priorities, like maintenance on the house, so things will still be fairly slow, but a guy can get a LOT done in a weekend when there's some new parts motivating him!

The aggressive goal for driveable car is Aug-Sep 2017, we'll see if I can make that work!

                              -sarge

upload CP pics to CP & you won't have an issue anymore. photobucket sucks (not to mention all of the popups & ads they send out)
