Either your calculator is off or you’re using a higher redline or a taller tire. Like I said I’ve got this tranny in my car right now… I’ve topped out 4th and its definitely not 151mph

Regarding the billet oil pump gears, I know that Bill from Miataroadster.com now only supplies them with the pump to make sure that the clearance between the pump case and gears is optimal. When I got them, that was not the case and I got the gears by themselves and fitted them into a new oem pump housing. The clearances were a little on the tight side, but after a few minutes of lapping them with some valve compound, the fitment was perfect.

My *guess* is that your friend is either talking about these clearances or about actually fitting wider gears to make the pump flow more volume - this would of course require machining the pump housing.

Anyways, good luck with your build and post lots of pics!

Edit: I just re-read some of your posts and you wrote "custom billet oil pump and gears". So, your pump housing is completely aftermarket and was machined from scratch? I doubt it, but who knows. I'd like to see some pics of it.

Also, what are your plans for engine management?

I used a 215/40/18. Let me plug in 205/45/17 (the ones I have now)

That drops 4th to 148. I used 3.85 as the final drive ratio, is that right?
Block is almost done, cylinders are overboard for Weisco pistons, pro gram billet main caps have been line bored, and my chinese EDT rods have been machined to right specs. Everything has been balanced.

Ok here is what my buddy said,

"Feel free to state the fact based on my prepping over 50 pumps that the Mazda OEM pumps are like snowflakes and we had to make the gears to fit the lowest common denominator pump housing dimensions after much research."

Cool, just what I thought. BTW, is this Bill (Miataroadster) who you are talking to as I don't know anyone else who has made aftermarket oil pump gears.

I am still interested in seeing your custom billet oil pump housing though.

My "custom" oil pump is in fact the one that Bill sells. I havent even bought it yet but I will post pics once I do.

Engine management will be Megasquirt II or III if its out by the time I am done.

Well, in that case there is nothing 'billet' about it as it's just an ordinary oem Mazda pump that's been measured/machined to have optimum clearances with his billet pump gears. BTW, I didn't think he sold them anymore?

Also, depending on how much work you have already done to your head, I'd agree with the others in that you should use the solid lifter head from a Miata. Not only does it have solid lifters, it probably flows as good stock as a worked BP05 head.

Ok guys I am going to cut out answering questions until I get the parts back from the machine shop. I know you want to see pics and progess so that is what I will feed you. I bet it will be a few weeks before I get the parts back so grab a beer and watch a movie!

                  Or work on your project!

LOL. I am getting the block back from the machine shop tomarrow. To line bore the block for the pistons its going to cost me $450. Is that too much? To late now anyways.

I am packing my stuff up again on thursday for my move back to Germany. I should be able to get the motor done there. I got rid of my escort since I cannot take it with me to Germany so I will be looking for a new shell here in the next year or two. I hope I can still find one by then.

Cool, nice to see that you didn't give up, even after all your tools were stolen.

Where in Germany are you staying? I was in born in Stuttgart and lived there for 9 years before moving here.

Vilseck as of now but I know that will change once I sign into 64th replacement co at the Frankfurt Airport. The closer I am to Frankfurt the better since all of my friends are there, know the area, and that is where all of the machine shops are located that I know of.

I have to call the machine shop back in an hour to see if they can machine the rods to fit the wrist pins. I just remember how tight they were and that someone (lex I think) told me that they had to have the rods machined to fit the wrist pins.

Need to ask about measuring for bearings too. I should post a pic of my new tool chest, its orange

Turns out that the cylinder walls were tapered on all 4 cylnders. Bill told me that it took him longer to fix that than to do anything else. Bill's dad did the line boring and he also machined out 0.001 out of the both ends of the rods so that the wrist pin would fit in easier and so that it would sit on the crank properly.

My crankshaft is now fully balanced and he told me that when he started with it it was only 3/10 of a gram out of balance. He told me that was remarkable for a factory crank. Bill also balanced the rods and pistons so everything in the rotating assymbly is now nice n balanced.

Next up is freeze plugs and an OEM water pump. I dont see why I need an mod'd mater pump but if anyone has anything to add please tell me. The freeze plugs will be bronze.

I will get an oil pump in a few months but I still need to get the MBSP and have my oil pan milled to fit the MBSP.

The block is oh so close to being done. Now I just have to coat everything in PAM so that they dont rust on the trip to Germany.

wtf are you talking about having the oil pan milled to fit the MBSP? it's a direct fit, the escorts have steel shims that take up the MBSP thickness along the edge of the pan... throw those out, install MBSP.

IMO you're better off with a brand name new oil pump from a parts store. Jho bought one from the dealer and it turned out to be a reman.

Pic of shims please! I havent had a put together motor is almost 2 years so I need a visual referance.

thanks for the water pump info.
