I think I finally figured out my starting and drivability issues with MS. I never set the spark angle in the settings according to the manual and one of my injectors is leaking.

    So I ordered some parts:

Everything to upgrade my MS1 to a MS 3/3X and some ID 725cc injectors.

The plan is now after I get all this running is to install an OEM 36-1 trigger wheel with 01 Miata cam and crank sensors so I can run COP's and sequential injection.

After that it will likely be an 01 Miata VVT head, colt tri-flow cams, and ITBS done in a way that will have a VICS type setup. I have no idea how I will achieve that right now but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

If I ever open the engine again, it will be getting forged china rods and some 85mm 11:1 supertechs to reduce the rotating weight a little more.

Its looking more and more like I will never get to do the secret engine swap I had planned if I keep doing stuff to this engine...............

Also just for everyone's information, I have experienced zero negative issues from having an aluminum flywheel and SOHC crank. I dont feel I needed to adjust my driving habits at all for takeoff or shifting and turning the A/C on doesnt affect it any worse then it used to.

No negatives but how about the positives? Does it rev noticibly quicker?

And if your not gonna do a secret engine swap, mind sharing what you were thinking?

I soon found out just how outdated it was when comparing settings to a MS3. Some of the things you can do with MS3 will go a long way in making the car feel like its on an OEM computer, but the learning curve is the hard part. At least the MS1 got me started down the path and I am kinda glad I didnt end up building it myself, due to almost wanting to throw this thing in the trash from frustration just trying to get the tuning right let alone trying to build it.

Oh yes it does rev much quicker and feels like it reacts instantly to throttle blips when rev matching. The revs also feel smoother then before even though the SOHC crank has less counter weights, but I suspect it could be due to the rod/piston balancing I did and not the lightened bottom end. I would also like to note that even though I went against the grain by doing the 3" exhaust, the car feels better down low then it ever did before and I doubt the minimal .020" overbore really had that much effect in that aspect.

          Here was my master plan:

          The donor:
          Roll-over wrecked Mazda3 with the 2.5L MZR and 6spd G box.

          The build:
2 options here really but being that it is a street car the first option is best. The best part about the L-series engines (MZR/Duratec) is they are like building blocks and you can create a few different combinations

2.5L block/head: And if you wanted to spend some cash, the block could be bored over a fair amount by re-sleeving it
2.3L Ford Ranger crankshaft (same concept as the SOHC crank for the BP)
2.3L forged rods and 2.5L forged pistons in 12:1 compression
          ITBS and a custom header
          Balance shaft delete
This combo would give you almost 2400cc and a nice well rounded rod ratio of 1.64 IIRC. The 2.5L on the other hand has a worse rod ratio then the BP but the block has some kind of dry lubricant on the cylinder liners to help fight some of the friction from side loading.

The other combo would be a 2.5L block with the 2.0L crankshaft with custom length rods. This would be almost 2100cc with a very sport bike rod ratio 1.86 or more depending on how you had the piston/rod combo designed

After I got the larger engine and drivetrain in and running, my next goal would have been to see if it would be possible that the new 2.0 focus engines cylinder head would fit on the larger block. Think Dual VVT, DI, and higher compression in the neighborhood of 14:1 if it would be possible on 91 pump gas with DI. I think it could considering the focus can run 87 with 12:1. The potential of this beast would be amazing for N/A but the tuning would be hell.......especially after you added in a variable length ITB system like the 787B had. This would have been likely the last thing I would have attempted after I got everything else to play nice.

Indeed, it would have been awesome. That project needs some serious time put into it, and that is something I dont have much of anymore.

Let me know how the tuning goes. I wont be messing with mine till I get the MS3 assembled. Depending on what I can figure out, I may just go with sequential fuel and cops from the beginning instead of later. My job has an account with the toyota dealer so should be able to get a good price on the cops and connectors.

some day i'll get things in order enough to get a drop in system going for MZR swaps.
i've already seen the motor fitted to a BG.

                    Pics???

I think the MZR is a great alternative swap to a KL and responds well to N/A or Turbo and more room in the engine bay

In other news I stopped by the junkyard today and found a BG Kia Sephia and discovered a couple cool things today. Sometime this week I plan to go snag the transmission and jackshaft from it.

Those of you looking for a clutch M/C with a reservoir may be able to use the Kia one. I didnt unbolt it to try it out but it looks like it would bolt on no problem except you need to re-bend the clutch line.

The Kia also uses what appears to be the same crank pulley, sensor and toothed wheel as a Miata, and since this sensor wiring is in the injector harness along with what appears to be sequential injection wiring, I grabbed all that for use with MS

I also found that the later non-BG Sephia with the Kia built 1.8 that looks a lot like the BP has a cam sensor in place of where the disty or CAS would normally go and since there were both Sephias next to each other I decided to try out the cam sensor on the BP head and guess what? It fits perfect and almost matches exactly with the disty bolt holes except one hole on the sensor housing will have to be enlarged slightly to work. The major hurdle is that the BP disty drive is a little long and is missing the knock pin needed to trigger the sensor.

I also grabbed the set of Kia plug and play injectors if anyone is interested in them. I will make a proper fro sale thread when I get a chance.

Well I tried to set my ignition timing today and couldnt figure out why it was so far out and I couldnt even get it close. Checked to make sure all my timing belt marks were lined up and with the crank pulley on TDC, both gears were 4 teeth off and I have no idea how that happened except maybe I didnt have the belt tension tight enough. I am surprised it was still running decent. Also discovered I have some bad crank pulley wobble due to the previous owner of said pulley perhaps putting a prybar in the slots on the front to hold it while they tightened the center bolt??????

I will have to get the Kia crank pulley on sooner then expected and order up some garage star ribbed alternator and water pump pulleys.

I have also revised my setup for running COP's and sequential injection:

OEM 36-1 BJ Protege 1.6L trigger wheel. Bolt-on for the BP crank pulley
Kia BP front crank sensor. Same as BH protege sensor with BP and looks identical to the pre-99 Miata one
                          Miata CAS

Note to self: Miataturbo.net is a tough crowd. Its hard getting answers to questions some times but maybe because its buried in some thread that they expect you to search for. IDK

I picked up a Kia BG transmission the other day to have something lower mileage and something that will have more strength in the long run, especially when combined with Ferdi's plate modded case I picked up. A LSD is also part of the plan on that.

After doing some checking it looks like I will just stay 4 lug and use the Kia BG knuckles with some 295mm (11.5") Mini Cooper rotors, stock caliper with adapter brackets and that should have no problem fitting inside my 16" wheels with room to spare. Fitting say the RX-7 4 piston calipers would require wheel spacers and be a hassle and not really necessary.

Converting a MS 1 to a MS3/3X is not the best idea considering the money I am into it now. It would be better to sell the old MS and start from scratch since I had to order a bunch of individual components to solder to the board anyway. That stuff will be here next tuesday and then the rest of the assembly should be a breeze.

I also got my ID725 injectors on thursday and they look awesome sitting in the box, haha

Also ordered my 36-1 wheel from an online mazda dealer
